@dafyddHG @K_Niemietz @UKERCHQ Dafydd is having a bit of a shocker, this morning… 🥴 Gas in the UK is sold through a privatized, competitive wholesale market where prices are primarily determined by global demand and supply.

@ScienceUnite @K_Niemietz @UKERCHQ You agree that supply is a factor. Therefore you agree that utilising the vast amounts of natural gas easily available in the North Sea, and the gargantuan amount of shale gas would materially affect the price of gas in the UK.

The CO₂ Equivalent Level (CO₂e) Here’s a current summary of where things stand, distinguishing between pure CO₂ and the full CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e) picture: CO₂ alone (Mauna Loa / NOAA) • The global annual average CO₂ concentration hit a new record of 422.8 ppm in 2024. • For 2025, the annual average is projected to reach ~425.7 ppm — 52% above pre-industrial levels. • CO₂ is currently growing at roughly 2.64 ppm per year. CO₂-equivalent (all long-lived greenhouse gases) This is the more alarming number. CO₂e converts the warming effect of all greenhouse gases — methane, nitrous oxide, CFCs, HFCs, etc. — into a single CO₂ figure. • The combined influence of all greenhouse gases crossed the 500 ppm CO₂e threshold back in 2019. • NOAA's AGGI data puts CO₂e at approximately 534 ppm as of 2023. At roughly 5 ppm/year growth for the total basket, the 2024 figure is likely around ~538–540 ppm CO₂e. • CO₂ is by far the largest individual contributor to radiative forcing (2.33 W m⁻², or 66% of the total), with methane the second largest at 0.57 W m⁻² (16%). The gap between the two numbers — roughly 115 ppm — reflects the cumulative forcing from methane (which has risen sharply in recent years), nitrous oxide, and industrial halocarbons. Methane reached 1,921.79 ppb in 2024, while nitrous oxide reached 337.71 ppb.

@dafyddHG @K_Niemietz @UKERCHQ Supply is a factor. And the price variation is heavily compounded by significant differences in taxation policy. But the actual cost of gas is much higher in both places when "externalities" are factored in.

@ScienceUnite @K_Niemietz @UKERCHQ Is the price difference in gas between the USA and the UK a function of the relative availability of gas in these two regions?

@dafyddHG @K_Niemietz @UKERCHQ Ah! Fracked LNG? That’s much cheaper because the US has so much of it. Unfortunately, there’s very little gas left in the North Sea. Wise for the UK to massively invest in energy sources that are cheap, plentiful and can’t be restricted by wars and unreliable partners.

@dafyddHG @K_Niemietz @UKERCHQ I live in both places. Petrol is twice as expensive in the UK than in the US. A big part of it is taxes. Half of the cost of fuel in the UK is tax, whereas US fuel taxes are significantly lower. If you’re ever in the US and suddenly require medical treatment — you’ll understand.

The Army Chief of Staff, a combat veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, asked Pete Hegseth why he was blocking the promotions of two Black officers and two female officers who had earned them. Hegseth refused to answer. Then he fired him. Nine U.S. officials told NBC News that Hegseth has blocked or delayed promotions for more than a dozen Black and female senior officers across all four branches of the military. Hegseth has now fired or sidelined more than a dozen generals and admirals. He is an out-of-control, unqualified former TV host and nobody in the Republican Party will say a word about it because they don’t want to make Trump angry. nbcnews.com/politics/natio…

The United States has spent EIGHT TRILLION DOLLARS fighting and policing in the Middle East. Thousands of our Great Soldiers have died or been badly wounded. Millions of people have died on the other side. GOING INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WORST DECISION EVER MADE.....

The next tipping point in the energy transition is approaching. Overall, solar has already been cheaper than fossil power for a while, but upfront costs used to be higher. That's no longer the case. Solar is now competitive upfront AND has vastly lower operating costs (no fuel)

You cannot bomb your way to trust, nor can you shoot your way to lasting safety. The history of the Middle East has reminded us of this truth time and again. Every new act of violence deepens wounds, fuels resentment, and sows the seeds of conflict for years to come. If we seek a future free of fear and mourning, we must first stop feeding the flames of hate and violence. The path forward, our only path forward, is the hard, courageous choice to build peace. #ChoosePeace
