After watching Project Hail Mary, this quote becomes even more stupid in the context of the film.
The act of cooperation between nations to buy a chance for humanity, the act of helping someone who is โnot usโ, and even sacrificing ourselves for them when their lives in danger is social.
And within that, thereโs social commentary. Just because Andy Weir puts aside anything that sounds social or political, doesnโt mean it is absent of one.
Perhaps the idea that absence of nationalities, ideologies and political beliefs in the vastness of space, where we are a small speck against the grand cosmos allows us to unite and help each other is a such commentary that Andy Weir refuses to acknowledge and engage with.
