@Neely_Lab Love your aging research. You don’t look a day over 50.
English

Congratulations to Professor Susan @ozannelab as new Director of the @IMS_MRL. Sue will also co-direct the IMS and head the @Cambridge_Uni Dept of Clinical Biochemistry. @StephenORahilly will remain Director of the MRC MDU and the PI of our Wellcome Discovery Research Platform.

@GilesYeo You are the only ones in such a big gym ? Says something about worlds motivation to exercise ?

Many thanks Simon & colleagues for your warm compliments - and for our our collaborations going back decades - merci!

On behalf of all your friends at the Babraham Institute I'd like to congratulate Bart Vanhaesebroeck FRS for his election to the Royal Society for his remarkable achievements in the PI3K signalling field! Bravo maestro!

rnz.co.nz/news/national/… Whoa! "624 courses cut this year included 434 from sciences, 79 from business and 59 from humanities" -- does anyone have a list of which courses are going? I hope my colleagues at Massey are all OK.

@ppgardne Looks like the plastic got brittle really quickly ?

@StephenORahilly But metformin also increases GDF15 so could contribute in way you describe ? Also still need to explain what transient circulating micromolar levels of metformin are doing apart from effects in liver ? Competition with endogenous substrates for OCT tranporters e.g. adrenaline ?
English

@ShepherdPeterR The acute effects of metformin to reduce circulating insulin levels are unrelated to GDF15. They are due to the Warburg type effect metformin has on intestinal cells causing glucose to flood into intestinal epithelium with the pancreas responding by reducing insulin secretion.
English

Just had a chance to look at this in detail. I wonder if the effects of GDF15 to enhance insulin sensitivity are truly "independent of food intake"? Animals treated intermittently with high doses of GDF15 over several days will show changes in the pattern of food intake /
Daniel J Drucker@DanielJDrucker
GDF15 activation of GFRAL receptor reduces glucagon and increases β-adrenergic signaling, in turn, improving #insulin action in the liver and white and brown adipose tissue independent of #weightloss Will these actions translate in humans? @Cell_Metabolism cell.com/cell-metabolis…
English

@StephenORahilly And therefore explain metformin action on insulin sensitivity as well ?
English

@StephenORahilly @Cambridge_Uni Having been there myself at the time I agree but would frame it more that Keith ran an amazing first 100 in the relay but passed baton to a small number of people, you being one of foremost, that then propelled it to where it is today. Take a bow Steve
English

A nice summary of how the @Cambridge_Uni works with the NHS. Remarkable progress since Clinical School only started in 1976. Campus is unrecognisable from when I arrived in 1991. Keith Peter’s vision and energy were crucial to lift-off cam.ac.uk/stories/NHS-at…

@GilesYeo @ProlactinGuy I spoke to senior Air NZ person a few years ago who said they needed rough average of weight of typical passenger to calculate fuel they needed as they were I’m using more fuel than expected. No personal ID info taken so seems sensible me. Media love this type of clickbait though
