Here is a (theoretical) run-down of what a solo-dev gets from $1.000.000 gross revenue on Steam: Gross: $1000k Chargeback, VAT (~20%): -$200k Steam Cut (30% of 800k): -$240k Publisher (~40% of 560k): -$224k Taxes (Austria, ~45% of 336k): -$151k Result: $185k (18% of gross)

@ArturiusPendrgn @EndymionYT I really don't care about IGN articles, I also find 90% of game journalism to be shit. And I'm not arguing whether this specific game will be a flop or won't. It very well might be. Just saying that early trailers are rarely representative of the final game.

Watch. Horizon: Hunters Gathering will be a flop. Promo material will look good to people without working prefrontal cortexes. IGN will get early access and rate it 7-8/10. The shills who never seem to buy games will say they're ecstatic about the apparent "representation" among other buzzwords. The game will drop, no more than 10k peak, dropping off to unsustainable levels until the servers are forced to shut down. The shills will blow their backs out coming up with any excuse they can for why it failed. "Chuds being negative scared real players away", "it was an oversaturated market", blah blah blah. Anything but accept that we were right: this isn't a Horizon game, it's another games-as-a-service bastardization of Horizon games, with none of the style, vibe, or fun, but with way more monetization and token representation.

It’s because of this toxic positivity attitude that the industry ended up with Concord & Highguard. No thanks we’ll keep using our voices to change things. We will keep rejecting every Concord-like & then some. They can get mad about it all they want, players fund the industry & keep it alive, so probably a good idea to not spit on them Jeffy boy

@ArturiusPendrgn @EndymionYT That's true. Management rarely listens to devs and it is a huge problem. But I have no idea as to why they would not address playtest feedback as even shitty studios take those things seriously. And those problems would come out even in early playtests.

You don't. I do. The devs aren't being heard by management. To much bureaucracy and ego. Their characters looked like ass, their levels were bland. We knew it, their lower devs knew it. But their management didn't care. It was great and they'd fire or relocate anyone who said otherwise. Well, those devs talk. And we listen now. Our pattern recognition gained more data points for spotting slop.

@ArturiusPendrgn @EndymionYT That's why trailer reception alone is not all that matters to studios/publishers. Especially as studios don't release games randomly, they hold playtest sessions regularly and (hopefully) have some idea of actual game reception. What failed in case of Concord's process? No idea.

@ArturiusPendrgn @EndymionYT But judging unreleased game by trailer alone is dubious at best. Cause the way that those trailers are made is often janky as hell. And I'm saying that having worked in an indie studio and having made a lot of these "trailer hacks" myself to showcase still unfinished features.

@ArturiusPendrgn @EndymionYT Sure you can have opinion, even about the game you haven't played. But that's not the point, point is you won't have constructive feedback for the dev as it's just as you described your "sense" of a good game. To have feedback you'd play the game and validate that gut feeling.

I've played enough games in my 35 years on this planet to have a sense for a good game based on the info that leaks out ahead of it. If the game doesn't respect me, I won't respect it with my wallet. You can winge about "not judging by its cover" and "giving it a chance" all you want. If it smells like slop, I am not wasting my money. None of us are. And now you got another Concord. Simple as.

@EndymionYT Keyword being players. If you haven't played the damn game, you're not a player so you won't have any constructive feedback the dev could use.

Especially not a good idea to say players opinions don’t matter when you have a new game where your career depends on it doing well or not. 🤷🏻‍♂️

So with my new GUI system I'll probably end up doing a small, UI-only game to test it out. Current idea - spaceship controls simulator. What do you think? 🧐 #indiedev #gamedev #space #unity

@TheGamerSection (2/2) The point is not some "ownership". @LiamTwose did create it, but that's not what matters. What is important is tag's popularity and traction during those events. If it's spammed daily, it will be ignored by both people and algorithms.

@TheGamerSection (1/2) I'd really want to give props for owning up to a mistake, but that post seems like an insult: - 100% ChatGPT written article - another AI-slop poster on top showcasing devs voicing concerns as angry people cursing - you did not understand the point at all

@khaliltooshort To have "some feedback" about a game you should actually play it 🙃 What you're talking about is just opinion or criticism of random gameplay clips and whatever it would be, it would most likely be useless for a dev.

I absolutely HATE this mentality. It doesn’t matter if someone has played, watched, or listened about something. If they do not like it and want to voice that, then they have every right to do so How about people stop being baby back bitches and take some feedback regardless if it’s positive or negative. So tired of this fake “kumbaya” bullshit

GUI is my main gamedev weakness. So I decided to develop a universal GUI system for all of my future projects - what could go wrong 😅 In all seriousness it's progressing surprisingly smoothly! #gamedev #indiedev #struggle #unity
