Many don’t fully understand why EVR described Tamil as a barbaric Shaniyan unfit even for begging. It wasn’t because he harbored some visceral hatred for Tamil as a language. In fact, he often said Tamil was superior to Hindi and Sanskrit, claimed South Indian languages were regional variants of Tamil, and even proposed reforms to Tamil scripts. So why the venom? Because EVR had actually read ancient Tamil literature. Take just three examples from “secular” Tamil literature: 1. Silappatikaram describes Kannagi’s wedding being officiated by Brahmin priests. When she burns Madurai, she prays to Agni to spare Brahmins, cows, ascetics, and the helpless. Strike one. 2. Grammar book Nannool classifies humans, devas, and naraka-vasis (beings of hell) under uyarthinai - a metaphysical hierarchy, not a materialist one. Strike two. 3. Thirukkural speaks openly of God worship, Karma, rebirth, the nether world, and Pitru rites. OUT! Page after page, ancient Tamil literature is steeped in a Hindu worldview with rich contributions from Jainism and Buddhism. There is no wedge between “Tamil culture” and Indic metaphysics. They are indistinguishable. And that was the problem. EVR did not hate Tamil; he hated Hinduism. His rationalism could not digest a civilizational literature that treated dharma, karma, rebirth, gods, rituals, and worship as self-evident truths. Since he could not reconcile this with his atheistic worldview, he chose intellectual consistency over sentiment: he rejected Tamil literature entirely, mocked its poets as useless barbaric fools who did nothing to advance society. He derided the idea of Tamil as a “mother,” calling her a weak mother producing poor milk, contrasting her with English, the “canned milk” of modernity. He opposed Thamizh Thaai Vaazhthu, just as he opposed Kadavul Vaazhthu. Despite EVR's extreme views, it is possible to understand where he is coming from. There is a shred of intellectual honesty in this. But what followed was a Goebells level propaganda. Dravidian ideologues realized that Tamils were too deeply attached to their language to accept EVR’s extreme rationalism. So instead of rejecting Tamil literature outright, they began to blatantly distort it by cherry-picking verses, reinterpreting metaphysics as social metaphor, and force-fitting ancient texts into a “secular, rational” framework they were never meant to serve. This is intellectually dishonest. EVR would have called Dstocks out if he were alive today. Despite all this, both Tamil and Hinduism share two traits that frustrates their critics: magnanimity and resilience. Tamil, like Hinduism, has outlived multiple invasions, distortions and it will outlive a thousand more. It will magnanimously welcome all criticisms, adapt to the times and come out on top. வசவாளர்கள் வாழ்க! வைதாரையும் வரவேற்கும் தமிழகம். தமிழ் வெல்லும்!

Iran seems to be following a strategy of unveiling more and more impressive military capabilities as the war goes on. They just fired long-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, one of the most strategically significant U.S. military bases in the world (hosting B-52 bombers, nuclear subs, etc.), nearly 5,000km away from them in the middle of the Indian ocean 👇. Diego Garcia has never been hit before in any war in its 5 decades of existence, and no-one knew Iran had these types of capabilities (Iran themselves said their ballistic missile range was limited to 2,000 kilometers). Two days ago, they also took down an "unkillable" F-35 fifth-generation fighter jet, something which has never happened before (militarywatchmagazine.com/article/footag…). They've also managed to take control of the world's most strategic oil chokepoint, and have proven they can hit any strategic target in the wider Middle-East, even the most protected ones (such as Israel's Haifa oil refinery: aljazeera.com/news/2026/3/19…). All in all, it sounds almost unbelievable but Iran appears to have a genuine form of escalation dominance over the United States military, with its trillion dollar budget. In a very real way, it's even more impressive than Vietnam or Afghanistan: those countries resisted a superpower, Iran appears to be competing with one. It also makes you think: what comes next? And that's exactly what escalation dominance is all about: keep raising the stakes until the other side blinks. It's about making Trump think "wait, I thought I was picking a fight with the skinny kid and turns out he's Bruce Lee."

How low France had fallen 😢 Live from Tel Aviv, France's foreign minister condemns Hezbollah and Iran for their "aggressions against Israel" against which "Israel has obviously the right to defend itself." Literally framing Iran and Hezbollah as the aggressors here and Israel as the poor victim merely defending itself 🤦 All the more disgusting given the historical depth of France's links to Lebanon, which go back all the way to St. Louis in the 13th century, when France committed to protecting the Maronite nation in Mount Lebanon. France is betraying a 700-year relationship. Chirac was extremely close to Lebanon, so much so that after leaving office he spent the last decade of his life in an apartment owned by the Hariri family. When Chirac died in 2019, Saad Hariri said: "I felt a great sadness. The same sadness I felt when I lost my father" (thisisbeirut.com.lb/articles/13080…). And now, just as Israel is invading the place, destroying the South of the country like it did Gaza (according to Israel themselves who literally said "we are going to do what we did in Gaza": axios.com/2026/03/14/isr…) and displacing 1 million civilians, France is telling the Lebanese, from the territory of its aggressors: "too bad, Israel has every right to do this to you" 🤮

Hamas was founded in Dec 1987 by Palestinian Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and other Gaza-based members of the Muslim Brotherhood during the First Intifada. It started as their political/militant arm against Israeli occupation and the secular PLO. Israeli officials later admitted funding Yassin's early Islamist charities/mosques in the 1970s-80s as a divide-and-rule tactic vs. Arafat's Fatah. But Hamas was created and led by Palestinians from the start.

That is a textbook false equivalence. Trump’s current behavior does not erase hers. One person being vulgar at 79 does not magically purify another person’s record. And no, the issue is not “something dumb at 15” in the abstract. The issue is whether later conduct shows growth, remorse, and change, or whether the same moral pattern keeps reappearing in adulthood. That is exactly why your defense is weak. If someone used slurs, trafficked in antisemitic imagery, and later celebrated atrocities or dehumanized victims, then the obvious inference is not “everyone was young once.” It is that the worldview formed early and was never seriously abandoned. There is actual research behind that point. Political and moral orientations often begin forming in adolescence and can remain surprisingly durable over time. Research on political socialization and the impressionable years finds that attitudes acquired in youth frequently persist into adulthood, even if they later get expressed in more polished language.  doi.org/10.1017/S00071… doi.org/10.1016/j.adol… doi.org/10.1017/S00071… So the real question is simple: Did she repudiate it, or did she mature into it? Because when later pattern still includes slurs, antisemitic caricature, or celebrating rape, murder, and mass violence, then the “she was 15” line stops being a defense and starts becoming evidence of continuity. And yes, that also reflects on her husband. Not in the childish sense of guilt by marriage, but in the ordinary moral sense that the people we choose, defend, and build a life with do say something about our judgment, our values, and the kind of soul we can live comfortably beside. And at some point the “she was only 15” defense stops being an explanation and starts looking like an alibi. People’s worldviews often begin to take shape in adolescence, and many later choose partners who broadly reflect their values, attitudes, and social outlook. Interesting whether there is research on assortative mating and homogamy? 10.1086/687533 10.1111/jomf.12353 10.1037/cfp0000141 10.1177/02654075251359404 Maybe you should stick to "music supervision"..

@jzux She wasn't 15 when October 7th happened. She was an adult and she openly supported it. She wasn't 15 when she illustrated a book about Jewish cockroaches. She was an adult and knew what she did. You're incredibly misogynistic for denying her the agency to believe what she does

You can say anything you want about Sunil Gavaskar but there is no better example of someone respecting the past in cricket, the players who paved the way and turning up for them. He does this consistently and with so much genuine feeling. This is another thing we may have lost with the march of time and the progress Indian cricket has made on other fronts.

He, for sure, needed to apologize because he threw at Mitchell's body and not at the stumps, despite the stumps being clearly visible. If anything, his apology should have come straightaway and not later. Never teach your players to be dickheads. It's a slippery slope.
