President Theodore Roosevelt and conservationist John Muir on Glacier Point, Yosemite Valley, California, 1903. This photo was taken on a camping trip that John Muir took the President on, to try and convince him to push for laws to preserve the wilderness and the natural world.
Roosevelt returned from that camping trip feeling refreshed and enthusiastic about conserving the wilderness areas of America. Over the following years, he created national monuments, parks, and wildlife sanctuaries, saving approximately 230 million acres of public land for all Americans for all time.
