This might not even be a theory because in the comic book industry, Comic Book artists are tasked with drawing close/similar to the artist before them, at times leading to certain features being exaggerated

so i have a theory, and i'm dubbing it "mohawk telephone". i genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, believe that each time a new artist had to depict american sonic, they were given the work of the previous artist as reference, and each time, they made the mohawk more prominent.
