OTD: MARTON FULOP IN MEMORIAM On this day in 2015, former Sunderland goalkeeper Marton Fulop sadly passed away aged just 32. As a player, Fulop was a towering goalkeeper who joined the Lads from Spurs. Upon his arrival, manager Roy Keane said: “I’m delighted the deal has been completed. Marton is someone we’ve been looking at for a while – he’s young, hungry and just the type of player we’re looking for at this football club.” The signing was an emergency loan initially after Ben Alnwick's injury. In January the deal was made permanent, with Alnwick going the other way. During his time as a Sunderland player, Marton had spells on loan with Leicester City, Stoke City and Manchester City. Leicester boss Ian Holloway tried to sign the keeper permanently from Sunderland and would even accuse Keane of being greedy when their bid for the player was rejected. Fulop played for Sunderland between 2007 and 2010, making 50 appearances. He stayed in England after leaving Wearside, playing for Ipswich Town (signed again by Keane) and then West Bromwich Albion. He would go on to play in Greece for Asteras Tripolis, until he took a break from football in 2013 after having a malignant tumour removed from his arm. Marton passed away in November 2015, and on the day of his death the Hungarian National Team wore black armbands for their match against Norway. Their goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly said after their 1-0 win: "We simply could not afford to concede any goals on this match, out of respect to him." When Norway headed a ball onto the crossbar, commentator Istvan Hajdu B. remarked: "This was probably tipped to the bar by Marton Fulop... this was a helping hand from the sky". In the following days, tributes poured in for Fulop. Sunderland flew flags at half mast, and our chief executive at the time, Margaret Byrne, said: “We are devastated to hear of Marton’s passing. He was a genuinely lovely man, liked and respected by everyone at the club during his four years with us. It is desperately sad when we lose a member of our Sunderland family but to lose one so young and in such circumstances is simply heartbreaking.” In 2016, before Hungary's first Euro 2016 match, the three goalkeepers were spotted holding a pair of goalkeeper gloves labelled with Fulop's name. It turned out to be a gift from Marton's dad, and they'd promised to keep the gloves with them throughout the tournament. Today, so many touching messages have been shared on social media as they always are on this day. He is forever in our hearts, forever red and white. RIP MARTON FULOP

Written by a fellow veteran and good friend of mine. I have his permission to redeploy it. "I'm quite proud of this one. A soldier doesn't want to go to war, but does it anyway, He does it for those he loves and hopes to see the break of day. He dreams of home, hot cups of tea and fires that are aglow, And when the guns fall silent, in the wind, the poppies blow. He hates not what is in front of him but loves what's left behind, So when his call to arms arrived on the dotted line he signed. His mind drifts back to summer fields where peaceful rivers flow, And when the battles roar is stilled, the poppies gently blow. So many didn't make it home, their blood for freedom spent, Praying heaven's grace upon them as through dark nights they went. I hope they walked once more on England's pastures, green and true, And when the guns at last fell still, the poppies gently blew." ©️ Keith Lawson.

“Tribute In Light” The events of September 11th, 2001, left the world in turmoil, and were meant to crush the foundations of the belief in Liberty and Freedom. The senseless loss of life can never be replaced and should never be forgotten. What transpired in the days and weeks after the attacks was a coming together, from all walks of life, to protect and strengthen those beliefs that the cowards tried to crush. Tomorrow, at midnight, you will be able to mint this image for free. A small token from me to help enforce the idea that good will always prevail. Never forget.

Cannot allow a comment that is so mired in utter historical ignorance to go unchallenged - have attended far too many funerals, for far too many good people and seen far too many tears, all within the last 40 years! Respect costs nothing #LestWeForget
