Part 1: Chinaโs Humiliation, Abduction, and the Murders of The Panchen Lamaโsโฆ?
The Panchen Lama is seen as the Moon of Tibet as the Dalai Lama is seen as the Sun. Ever since Chinaโs invasion of Tibet, the Panchen Lama is a figure that has stood along side the Tibetan people and suffered. While the 14th Dalai Lama had to flee for concerns regarding his safety, the 10th Panchen Lama stayed behind. He taught religious teachings and cultural traditions of Tibetans all throughout Tibet, reminding us not to forget our roots. During the early stages of Chinaโs rule over Tibet, the 10th Panchen Lama wrote the โ70,000 Character Petitionโ which was a report complaining about Chinese oppression towards Tibetans sent to Chinese Premier, Zhou Enlai. For this petition, the 10th Panchen Lama was subjected to intense public humiliation and brutal interrogation. The Panchen Lama was forced to be publicly humiliated, spit on, beat, and tortured just for speaking up about Tibetan struggles. Even after all this, at the age of 51, Chokyi Gyaltsen, the 10th Panchen Lama would deliver a highly criticizing speech regarding Chinese policies and their Cultural Destruction towards Tibet.
However, this is where the controversy liesโฆJust days after delivering this speech, the Panchen Lama would be attending and hosting religious ceremonies. One day after the ceremonies, the Panchen Lama would go back home to catch some rest. However, there would be suspicious Chinese โmedical officialsโ entering and leaving the 10th Panchen Lamaโs quarters where he would soon be discovered deceased. Many Tibetans and the 14th Dalai Lama believe that he may have been poisonedโฆ.
However, this would not be the end of Chinaโs evil acts. Publicly humiliating and potentially assassinating the 10th Panchen Lama was not enough. They needed more in order to attack one of the cores of Tibetan Buddhism and Culture. Fast forward to May 14, 1995. The 14th Dalai Lama would recognize 6 year old Gedhun Chokyi Nyima as the 11th Panchen Lama. Just 3 days later, Chinese government officials forcibly entered, and abducted the 6 year old child along with his whole family. Even today, almost 30 years later, Tibetans still have no idea where he is or any proof of life. Many Tibetans hope and pray that no harm has come to the 11th Panchen Lama or his family. On November 1995, the Chinese government would have their own โceremonyโ where they forced monks to recognize a fake Panchen Lama, son of Chinese officials who no Tibetan recognizes.
When learning about the Cultural Destruction and Genocide of Tibet and Tibetans, the Panchen Lama would be a place to start. As another major head of Tibetan Buddhism, China desperately needed any authentic Panchen Lama, gone and disappeared so they could install their own. This grants China a dangerous amount of control over the Tibetan people, culture, and religion. However, these attacks sadly wont end here. China seeks to carry out the exact same actions when time comes for the next Dalai Lama. They seek to install their own to expand their power over Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhism.
