Durov is missing the point here, and the students he claims to speak for are exactly who NTA is trying to protect. Let me give credit where it is due, because I think NTA got this mostly right. Let me start with what was actually happening. The NTA has categorically said that no paper was leaked. So, there was no real leak. What there was, was rackets running channels openly named "PAPER LEAKED NEET" and "Re-NEET 2026," selling fake papers to terrified kids and demanding anything from a few thousand to a few lakh rupees. Durov says Telegram shows when a message was edited, and that they are making that edited tag more prominent. Fine. But think about who is on the other side of this. A 17 year old at 1 AM before the biggest exam of their life, running on no sleep and pure fear. When a channel flashes a "leaked paper" at them, they are not going to squint for a tiny edited label. Scared people do not read the fine print. NTA understood that. Durov does not seem to. But the most important bit is simply the fact that Telegram has no office in India and answers to nobody. India tried taking these channels down one by one, and it went nowhere. New ones appeared faster than the old ones came down. When the platform refuses to be reachable and lets extortion run in the open, what exactly is a government supposed to do, shrug and let students get robbed? So NTA did something smart, if you read the actual order. The block is only till June 22, around the re-exam. The editing curb runs till June 30. It is targeted, time bound, and tied to one specific exam window. Yes, a temporary block is not a perfect tool, and we should always be careful about blocking apps. Fair. But clearly, Telegram would just not cooperate and the platform continued to run rackets that were actively fleecing scared children. NTA chose to protect the kids. That was the right call. Durov is defending his app. NTA was defending 22 lakh students. I know whose side I am on. :)

@whattalawyer First u should know how tg operates across the world , n read what nta has said before posting on x saying it can be done through other apps .others in India r complying n can be controlled not tg , tg is hub of scams . It temp ban 2 prvnt future frauds Abt fake leaks

Similarly, candidates can be defrauded through countless other methods as well, not just Telegram. Focusing on a single platform misses the larger issue. The problem lies with those running the scams and the loopholes that enable them, not merely the medium being used. If fraudsters are determined, they will simply move to another platform or another method. The solution is stronger safeguards, better enforcement, and accountability not scapegoating one app.

If a paper has to be leaked, there are countless ways for it to happen. Banning Telegram is not a solution. Question papers can be shared in person, through private groups, phone calls, screenshots, or any number of other channels. The real issue isn't the platform, it's the failure to secure the examination process.

Air Force is delivering NEET papers. Telegram is banned to prevent paper leaks. Earlier, these were measures for security threats. Now, they’re being used to protect a question paper from the system itself. What a downfall under Modi Govt.

Today's Telegram ban is a sign to foreign investors, to domestic techies/startups, even to enemies of the State. An enemy State could probably bring digital India to its knees tomorrow just by connecting a leaked exam paper to UPI.

government can’t stop exam papers from leaking so they just banned the app instead 150 million people punished because they can’t catch the actual leakers same playbook every time. couldn’t control crypto, banned it, then added 30-40% tax instead of actually regulating it properly an 19 year old hacked an IIT Hyderabad government site recently. that’s the level of security we’re working with. other countries run exams without papers leaking every cycle. if it does leak, they don’t ban an entire messaging app used by 150 million people income tax department can already access our data under the guise of “just tax” at some point banning things stops looking like solving problems and starts looking like avoiding them What else we can expect from this government??
