Dear Nigerian Parents, Your Ego is Why Your Daughters Suffer in Silence. A few days ago, I watched a documentary called Care or Control about three women who had abortions. Two of them were teenagers when they were impregnated by their boyfriends, and they were so terrified of their parents finding out that they went to quack doctors. As they lay on makeshift operating tables where knives and scissors were used on them, they weren’t afraid of dying… they were afraid of being judged. Sexual curiosity is a natural thing experienced by teenagers, yet in Nigeria, it is treated as a moral failing. Adults act shocked and disgusted, even though they did the same things (or worse) when they were younger. Because sex is seen as a sin, children learn about it from the streets, from the internet, and from predators. And when the worst happens such as teenage pregnancy, leaked nudes or assault, these girls don’t run to their parents. They run away from them. When a close friend of mine was 13, she was coerced into sending explicit photos of herself to an older man who later leaked them. She went through unimaginable pain and shame for months, and she never told her parents. To this day, they have no idea their daughter was violated like that. Why? Because she knew if she told them, they wouldn’t hug her. They would insult her. They would call her a disgrace and beat her. If your child is suffering and their first instinct is to hide it from you to stay safe, then you haven’t raised a “well-behaved” child, you’ve raised a terrified one. Predators thrive because they know young girls have no backup. They know that if they leak a video or hurt a girl, she will be too afraid of her father’s belt or her mother’s insults to speak up. Dear Nigerian parents, your job isn’t to be a judge, a jury, or an executioner. Your job is to be a safe space. Please do better. Stop choosing your reputation or the fear of what people may say over your children’s wellbeing. We should never live in a society where a girl feels her only options are the blade of a quack doctor, the threats of a blackmailer, or the weight of your judgment. Be the protector you’re supposed to be.
