Decoupling from China will likely be inflationary in the short term, but it is still the correct thing to do. China’s economic model cannot peacefully coexist with the Western economic model. For years, Western policymakers treated China as a “normal” trading partner. A little unfair competition here. A little subsidy there. A little intellectual property theft, but nothing the system could not absorb. That illusion is now collapsing. The OECD recently warned that China’s massive industrial subsidies have distorted competition across key global industries, including autos, solar panels, steel, aluminum, semiconductors, telecom equipment, rail, wind turbines, aerospace, and defense. According to the OECD, Chinese firms receive government support at levels several times higher than companies in OECD economies. In some sectors, up to 60% of China’s global market share gains over the past two decades were heavily driven by state support. This is not free market competitoon. This is state-sponsored industrial doping. Imagine a sports league where one team gets unlimited steroids, free equipment, paid referees, and government-backed loans at artificially low rates, then lectures everyone else about “fair competition.” That is China’s industrial policy. But here is the part many people still miss: China’s subsidies are not proof of strength. They are proof of weakness. If China’s system were truly superior, why do so many of its industries need endless government support just to survive? Why are so many Chinese companies exporting at razor-thin margins or outright losses? Why is domestic consumption so weak? Because Beijing’s model is built on the ugly tradeoff: The state gets rich. Favored industries get subsidized. Ordinary people get squeezed. China can produce cheap electric vehicles, cheap solar panels, cheap delivery, cheap rides, and cheap services because somebody is paying the real price. That “cheap” takeout delivery? Paid for by overworked couriers fighting for shrinking orders. That “cheap” ride-hailing service? Paid for by drivers trapped in oversaturated markets. That “comfortable” urban lifestyle? Paid for by tens of millions of low-income workers whose lives are anything but comfortable. A truly developed country is not defined by skyscrapers, bullet trains, QR codes, or cheap servants. A truly developed country is one where the average person can live with dignity. China’s model takes wealth from households, channels it into state-backed industrial champions, floods the world with subsidized exports, and then wonders why Chinese consumers cannot spend. This model is not sustainable. And worse, it does not just damage China. It exports economic pain to the rest of the world. China is using a state-subsidized industrial machine to undermine the foundations of free-market economies. Decoupling is economic self-defense.

13 जून 2019। मेरठ के पास लोइया गांव में शबी अहमद के खेत से एक कुत्ता किसी मानव अंग को लेकर भाग रहा था। कुत्ते को मानव अंग लेकर भागते हुए ईश्वर पंडित ने देख लिया। उन्हें शक हुआ। पुलिस को सूचना दी गयी। पुलिस ने आकर शबी अहमद के खेत की खुदाई की तो एक लाश मिली। लाश किसी महिला की थी जिसका सिर और दोनों हाथ गायब थे। पुलिस ने लाश को कब्जे में लेकर पोस्टमार्टम करवाया और हत्यारे की खोजबीन शुरु कर दी। हत्यारे को पकड़ना इतना आसान न था क्योंकि लाश का सिर गायब था। इसलिए उस लाश की शिनाख्त भी नहीं हो सकती थी। गांव के आसपास ऐसी कोई महिला गायब भी नहीं थी जिसकी हत्या पर शक जाता हो। तब वहां के एसएसपी साहनी ने एक नायाब तरीका निकाला। उन्होंने सोचा हो न हो लड़की कहीं बाहर से गांव में लायी गयी हो। गांव में कोई कुछ बताने को तैयार न था। एसएसपी साहनी ने तय किया कि गांव के जितने लड़के बाहर नौकरी करते हैं वहां जाकर छानबीन की जाए। वहां के थानों से संपर्क करके पता किया जाए कि क्या वहां किसी लड़की के गुमशुदगी की रिपोर्ट दर्ज है। एसएसपी साहनी की ये योजना काम कर गयी और पंजाब में लुधियाना से एक 23 वर्षीय युवती के गायब होने की सूचना मिली। लुधियाना के मोतीनगर थाने में इस युवती के गायब होने की रिपोर्ट दर्ज थी जो कि बीकॉम द्वितीय वर्ष की छात्र थी। इसके बाद पुलिस ने कड़ी से कड़ी मिलाते हुए जो जांच पड़ताल की उससे जो कहानी निकलकर सामने आयी वो इस प्रकार है। एकता देशवाल संभ्रांत और आधुनिक परिवार की लड़की थी जो बीकॉम द्वितीय वर्ष की छात्रा थी। मुक्त जीवन। खुले विचार। और वहीं उससे टकराया शाकिब अहमद। शाकिब वहां नौकरी करता था लेकिन उसने अपना काम और पहचान दोनों एकता से छिपाई। उसने अपना नाम उसे "अमन" बताया। उसे अपने प्रेम जाल में ऐसा फंसाया कि एकता उसके लिए कुछ भी करने को तैयार हो गयी। अमन ने उससे कहा कि वह घर से गहने लेकर आ जाए और वो लोग वहां से कहीं दूर जाकर नयी जिन्दगी शुरु करेंगे। वह अमन के झांसे में आ गयी और करीब 25 लाख कीमत के गहने और नकद लेकर वह घर से फरार हो गयी। अमन उसे लेकर सीधा मेरठ के दौराला पहुंचा जो कि एक कस्बा है। वहां किराये पर एक कमरा लेकर दोनों करीब एक महीने रहे। इसके बाद ईद के मौके पर अमन उसे लेकर अपने घर आ गया जहां उसकी असलियत सामने आयी कि वो अमन नहीं बल्कि शाकिब है। अमन का भांडा फूटते ही एकता को बड़ा झटका लगा। ईद के दिन दोनों में दिनभर झगड़ा होता रहा। शाकिब समझ गया कि अब इसे रास्ते से हटाने का समय आ गया है। बिना उसे रास्ते से हटाये 25 लाख के गहने उसके नहीं होंगे। कही लड़की भाग गयी तो भांडा भी फूट जाएगा और 25 लाख का घाटा हो जाएगा। इसलिए शाकिब ने ईद की उसी रात उसके हत्या की योजना बनायी। ईद की रात उसने एकता को कोल्डड्रिंक में नशीली दवा पिलाकर बेहोश कर दिया। इसके बाद उसी बेहोशी की हालत में वह कुछ दोस्तों के साथ मिलकर खेत पर ले गया जहां शाकिब ने बेहोशी की हालत में एकता की गला काटकर हत्या कर दी। गला काटने के बाद उसके दोनों हाथ भी काट दिये गये क्योंकि एकता ने अपने एक हाथ पर अपना नाम और दूसरे पर प्यारे "अमन" का नाम गुदवा रखा था। शाकिब को शक था कि अगर पुलिस को ये सबूत मिल गया तो भांडा फूट सकता है। लेकिन अमन गलत साबित हुआ। सालभर लगे लेकिन उसका भांडा फूटा। आज उस सिर कटी लाश के रहस्य से पर्दा उठ चुका है और शाकिब अपने दोस्तों सहित पुलिस की गिरफ्त में है। (फोटो: एकता देसवाल जो अब इस संसार में नहीं है।)
