not exactly a “humiliation ritual”, but the early 2000s was one of the darkest eras for the series, just cuz it was in this weird period of dormancy
the series was largely relegated to handheld spin-offs, and the two big console releases at the time were Air Ride and Epic Yarn

I'll focus primarily on Marble Zone. The level is made of mostly of basic jumps, simple blocky design, slow block pushing and waiting for it to bring you somewhere. It does nothing special with the movement and makes it barely different from a Mario game with ice physics.

@lilifying I mean, nor only is Sonic gonna release both a movie and 3d game next year, but also he’s gonna gonna be up again not just mario, but also according to certain rumors, kirby, spyro, megaman, and wario. Next year is going to be an all out brawl for platformer agendaposters.
