There’s no reason why we couldn’t have Salli Richardson [Whitfield], Halle Berry, Vivica A. Fox, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, Queen Latifah, Regina King ALL winning at the same time across several films and shows. Why they all couldn’t be snatching up awards, big checks and critical acclaim the way white actresses were is beyond me.

One of the reasons I love Rosamund Pike’s casting as Amy Dunne, aside from it being her first real leading role, is how deliberate it was. Fincher weaponized audience perception, casting her specifically to play off her public persona, which made the twist land even harder. If he’d cast Charlize Theron or Nicole Kidman or Natalie Portman as these three were also considered, it could’ve absolutely worked too, but we already know what to expect from them. Pike wasn’t on anyone’s list, Fincher even cast her partly because she’s an only child, so it was easy to root for her and that unpredictability is exactly what allowed her to completely subvert our expectations as an actress. For someone who had already been in the industry for so long, Pike really needed a role of a lifetime that was completely her own. She was great as Jane Bennet, but that was a role already defined by others. Amy Dunne, on the other hand, is hers, and it will always belong to her. A performance so singular that it permanently rewired how audiences see her 😁
