The @unmc Radiology Interest Group hosted 2025 Annual POCUS Event today last week! The evening began with “Introduction to Interventional Radiology” talk by Dr. Yu, giving students a glimpse into the scope and impact of IR. Medical students then participated in hands-on stations focused on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) exams and ultrasound-guided procedures. We’re grateful to our radiology faculty and residents who took time after work to support the event and share their expertise. Meet and get to know our 2025/2026 IR Fellow, Gunnar Whealy! Dr. Whealy, a Sacramento, California native, completed his undergraduate studies at Northern Arizona University and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He went on to complete a transitional year internship at MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, before pursuing residency in Interventional Radiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. During his time at UNMC, Dr. Whealy has valued the program’s unbeatable social camaraderie and strong sense of teamwork, as well as its excellent graded autonomy, which allowed him to progressively gain independence while being supported by approachable, engaged faculty. Dr. Whealy is passionate about Interventional Radiology for its unique blend of diagnostic imaging and procedures, as well as the flexibility it offers to tailor a career that aligns with individual interests and lifestyle goals—whether that means focusing on specific procedures or mixing diagnostic and interventional work. Following residency, he will join a private practice group affiliated with Renown Hospital in Reno, Nevada. Outside of medicine, Dr. Whealy enjoys spending time with his fiancée, Mina, their dog Elouise, and cat Colette. They love exploring the changing seasons, frequenting local Omaha favorites like Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in the fall, dining out, and traveling together.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Lei Yu as the new Program Director of our Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency! Originally from China, Dr. Yu moved to Omaha to attend medical school at UNMC, where she also completed her diagnostic radiology residency and interventional radiology fellowship. Since joining the faculty in 2022, she has been dedicated to patient care, resident education, and mentorship. She is passionate about guiding trainees through the milestones of residency, fostering both their technical expertise and their growth as confident, thoughtful physicians. As program director, Dr. Yu is committed to creating an environment where residents feel supported, challenged, and inspired throughout their training. In addition to her role as program director, Dr. Yu serves as Vice Chair of the SIR Women in IR Committee, where she works to expand opportunities, mentorship, and support for women in the field. She is also faculty advisor for the Radiology Interest Group, mentoring medical students as they explore radiology and pursue their career goals. Outside of medicine, Dr. Yu enjoys traveling the world with her family and balancing her children’s busy sports schedules with her professional commitments.
