The way that I see this working out is that Daniel Jones underperforms, the #Colts keep Ballard until DJ’s contract is up. Then they hire a new GM who will have decent cap space and a first round pick to find his new QB. Likely 2 seasons of suffering until we get a fresh start.

@RomeovilleKid It’s a lot to give a QB who played 12 games and suffered a torn Achilles. Especially seeing the Giants do the exact same thing and it blowing up in their faces.

Genuine question: Why not?
Is it because you think DJ isn’t worth that much? Or is it more so cap-related and you’d rather spend the money elsewhere?
As long as the Colts can spread his cap hit out and get out of the contract by 2028, then I think they’ll be in decent shape.

Well, yeah, the Colts *could* sign one of those guys, but they don’t want to. At all. They’re also out there for a reason. It would be an absolute disaster to lose DJ after they just told their entire team that he was “the guy” in the short- and long-term.

@RomeovilleKid This “DJ or nothing” and “losing DJ will cripple the organization” talk is wild to me. Fans can deal in absolutes all they want, but that’s not what I would expect from a credentialed journalist. The FA market has some solid vet options for significantly cheaper than DJ

The Colts did this to themselves. They don’t have a viable backup plan if DJ were to leave in free agency, which is why I think he still has a decent amount of leverage.
The Colts never intended for RL or AR (who wants out) to start in 2026. It’s DJ or nothing. Also, no 1R pick.

Am I the only rooting for a franchise tag on Daniel Jones? Don’t get me wrong, he played very well this past season but he has a concerning past with injuries and level of play. I’d like the #Colts see how he performs coming off another serious injury before committing long term.
