Paddy:We wanted the Hero design to feel like there was obviously a human inside the suit. It had to look fast and nimble, unique and readable Have overly long helmets been done before? Possibly. but we think there’s room for something special in #EchoBreaker #conceptart #gamedev

(3/3) Shinanigans ensued, with some bespoke jumping logic that made sure that you *always* jumped away from a wall at a 45 degree angle, but could still influence your movement while in the air.

(2/3) This was a tricky balance, we wanted it to have a sense of inertia and seamlessly blend in and out of normal (or sped up movement) but at the same time we wanted the player to have a good sense of confidence and reliability (especially when jumping off).

(4/4) For this design we looked at the form and colour of late 90s futuristic games as well as household tech items. This resulted in a more sleek design with some corporate liveries The influences here are a Panasonic handheld camera, WipeOut and Virtual-On (what a game!)

Here's the up to date version of the movement in EchoBreaker! "You can tell how important it was to maintain momentum, allowing the player to be expressive with how they move and launch themselves around." #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

"(4/4) p.s. As an aside, the surface raycast position lags behind the player when going fast, to make transitions off fast surfaces (onto normal surfaces or off ledges) more forgiving."

"(3/4) The main thing that makes this work well is that the speed is carried between movement states (move, jump) as well as from surface to surface. This stops sudden 'jolts' when transitioning, but also allows longer jumps from faster surfaces."
