I just wanna slide into this discourse to remind everyone that doujinshi doesn't mean fanbook/derivative works, even if most are that. The term includes original self-published work, and there is in fact a strong culture of self-published original work in the US.

i do wish non-JP artist alleys have a fanbook-oriented culture. i KNOW why people sell charms over fanbooks, i know it's expensive to have comics printed in the US, but i hope artists invest in it at least once. at a con i almost always buy someone's comic over their other merch
