I found out today I won William & Mary’s Alumni Association Fellowship Award. “the award represents a commitment by the Alumni Association to honor faculty whose classroom work has already achieved notoriety among students, colleagues & staff.” I’m truly stunned, because I believe our faculty are some of the best in the world. I am honored to be among them.

when I was pregnant, I went to a practice with rotating OBGYNs. when I was 38 weeks I saw a young, male doctor for the first time. unlike everyone before, he said I needed to be induced. I tried to push back & he told me I was putting my baby’s life at risk. I started to cry & he left. I worked it out with the other doctors in the practice, but one left me alone with my notes open on the computer a couple of weeks later. I checked & that doctor had described me as “hysterical.” sometimes I wonder how many women he went on to stereotype & terrorize.

the final letter has arrived: I have been awarded tenure. I am so stunned & grateful. my journey in academia has been long & at times arduous, but in this moment I feel joy &, shockingly, pride. I really did it. dare I say I earned it. & I look forward to doing the work that matters to me from this moment on. I am so grateful for all of your love & support. so many people have believed in me & this moment when I didn’t or couldn’t believe in myself. if you are one of those people—I love you. thank you.

if you think the post below is over-sharing, or cringe, or should remain private just know that you are not a safe place for your depressed friends & colleagues. until we speak about suicide & bring it to light it’ll continue to take the people we love. hi friends. I was barely getting by & then I got hit with countless emergency bills & a devastating incident at work. it all became unbearable & I became convinced everyone would be better off without me. I made a plan but had a flash of insight: a sad mom is better than a dead mom. I called a crisis hotline & they were wonderful, kept me out of the hospital. now, my doctors have got me. thank you to everyone who reached out. your words mattered more than you know. in the end my daughter deserves better & I’m going to keep struggling to give her that.
