Itโ€™s been 20 years since the City said it was building a โ€œluxuryโ€ cruise terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn. What a sad couple of decades itโ€™s been, with cruise ships spewing deadly diesel emissions into our air (& water), and @NYCEDC unable to build a working shore power system.

Shore power part of Manhattan Cruise Terminal plan - for ships, tugs, and other harbor vessels. As we've been saying (for a very long time now!), shore power incentivizes the switch to electric or hybrid vessels of all kinds. "As signaled for some time, shore power is key in the master plan, which includes an initial commitment of $20m for this at the terminal. Besides cruise ships, harbor vessels including tugs will now be able to connect to shore power to allow them to recharge their batteries and allow the tug fleet to begin the conversion to hybrid and fully electric propulsion through the use of on-board battery storage. The carbon tax on vessels is a part of @IMOHQ GHG strategy to phaseout carbon emissions via operation, technical and market based measures. The carbon tax will go to a net zero fund which will be used for decarbonization of the industry, similar to that of Montreal Protocol.
