The "monsters" did not "usurp" anything, They are just people infected with a Vampiric-Like disease, split roughly into two categories of feral and civilized, They still retain their humanity and identity For the most part, And by the end of the book are reestablishing civilization independent of the one remaining uninfected human. He is entirely justified in every action he undertakes in the book from the perspective of saving "humanity," until he himself realizes he is not saving anything, He is alone, The last survivor of an effectively dead species, Who has spent years hunting and killing for all purposes people. He has become a legend, a monster, that is feared. Which he realizes after he befriends one of the vampires, before he takes his own life after he realizes that he has been murdering innocent people, to avoid execution, And he comes to regret his choices In the end. This is not even a Reddit take. This is just what the book is.
