Nine-year-old Anna Sokolova died on March 20, 2022, in the basement of her apartment building near Azovstal, Mariupol.
Her mother, Yana, recalls the last hours:
โWe were hiding with my little daughter in our apartment on the second floor. A neighbor family joined us. On the morning of March 19, a bomb hit right by our window, damaging the apartment.
That night, everyone went to the basement. Explosions never stopped. Around 4 a.m., after another bomb struck, two ceiling slabs collapsed.
I survived, as did the neighborโs daughter, whom I pulled to safety. My daughter, Anna, had a slab crush her legs โ she died from her injuries.
A few hours later, the five floors above collapsed.
Six people in total died under the debris.โ
