I opened the portal one more time.
I don't know why.
I think I needed to see if he was wrong.
I needed it to be a glitch.
A bad photo. Bad lighting. My own paranoia.
I went to the register.
I scrolled back to Tunde Aborisade's name.
The photo was still my face.
But the name underneath it had changed.
It wasn't Tunde Aborisade anymore.
It was mine.

I went back to the portal.
I know.
His name was still there.
The photo was still loading.
It had been loading for three days since I first clicked it.
I watched the progress bar.
It finished.
The photo loaded.
I didn't recognise the face at first.
It took me a moment.
The lighting was bad. The angle was slightly off.
It was a face I had seen before but not in any context I could immediately place.
Then I placed it.
It was the face of a student.
A current student.
Someone in my faculty.
Someone I had seen in that same lecture hall not four days ago asking questions that nobody else was asking.
I sat very still.
Then I realised why I recognised the face so quickly.
It was the face of someone I see every morning.
In the mirror.

I went to Dr Fashola's office.
I knocked.
He opened the door, looked at me, and said:
"I wondered when one of you would come."
He let me in.
He didn't sit down.
He didn't offer me a seat.
He stood by the window with his back to me and said Tunde Aborisade had been a student here a long time ago.
He died.
The name stayed on the register because removing it caused problems.
I asked what kind of problems.
He said: "The kind that stop on their own if you leave the name alone."
I asked if the photo would tell me anything.
He turned around then.
For the first time since I came in, he looked directly at me.
He said: "Don't go back to the portal."
Then he opened the door.
The conversation was over.

The next morning Biodun sat in row G.
I saw him walk straight to it.
I opened my mouth.
Closed it.
What would I have said.
It wouldnโt have made sense anyways
Twenty minutes into the lecture he made a sound.
Not a word.
Just a sound.
Low. Involuntary. Like something had put its hand on him.
He stood up fast, said he needed air, and left.
He didn't come back that day.
Or the next.
When he finally returned four days later I asked him what happened.
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he said:
"There was someone sitting next to me."
I reminded him the seat beside him was empty.
He said: "I know."

After class I checked the course portal.
Tunde Aborisade was on the list.
Matric number. Department. Everything.
Profile photo was the grey silhouette. The default. Like he had never once logged in.
I clicked his name.
The page loaded halfway.
Then my browser closed.
Not crashed. Closed. Cleanly. Like something had pressed the button.
I opened it again.
His name was still on the list.
But the matric number was different.
I stared at it for a while.
Then I told myself I had misread it the first time.
I have thought about that decision every day since.

First lecture of the semester.
Dr. Fashola is taking attendance.
He gets to a name โTunde Aborisadeโ and calls it twice.
Nobody answers.
He marks it present both times.
Then he looks up at the class and says, very quietly:
"Row G. Back left corner. Don't sit there tomorrow."
Then he moves straight on.
No explanation.
Just continues down the register like he said nothing unusual at all.
We looked at each other.
Nobody spoke.
The seat in row G, back left corner, was already empty.
