Sad thoughts on Pesach eve. Perhaps even a little bit of whining. Trolls will be blocked. Decent followers will know that I care about the innocents among my enemies, and that I deeply loathe my current government. This is not virtue signaling; it doesn’t impress the blanket-haters anyhow. And I have been through too much to fake my basic feelings. So, dear trolls, don’t try to police our personal pain and fear as Israelis. You are bound to fail. Whenever I describe our everyday lives under the Iran and Hezbollah missiles, about 10% of the replies are gleeful quips such as “Something wrong with the war you ordered?” No one has ever said this to a bombed Gazan after 7 October, and rightly so, although so many Palestinians, in Gaza and beyond, were initially enthusiastic with the was Hamas started. I am thinking about an individual’s right not to be identified with their rulers, even in a democracy. The virtuous Americans demanding I atone for Netanyahu’s sins would never dream of taking personal responsibility for the acts of Donald Trump. Then come the righteous armchair knights who are deeply annoyed that I have a safe room and the Iranians and Lebanese civilians do not. Well, past Israeli governments may have a lot to answer for, but they did spend huge sums on civil wartime shelters (still not enough!), unlike all other militant regimes in the region. Am I privileged? Perhaps. In the 1960s, when the country was poor, my grandparents dug trenches in the hard kibbutz soil prior to the Six Day War, leaving the few concrete bunkers for us kids. Israeli children are somewhat safer because their society made choices to that end that other societies did not. And yet, no child in the world deserves to be unsafe. So no, I am not happy with any war my current government is waging. Hamas, Hezbollah and the Ayatollahs must be defeated, but not by self-serving mega-thugs lording over a crowd of racist ultranationalists. I happened to be born in a country where pacifism is, factually, a death wish. But I insist on remaining a peacenik, a seeker of pragmatic compromise, an activist and an assertive troll-blocker. May the next Passover be a far better Feast of Freedom, under new leaderships in Israel and Palestine and Iran, in a Middle East capable of peace diplomacy. To the rest of you, a happy Easter.
