It's a stupid way to think about football if you are putting players in labelled boxes and judging based on if they fit or not, rather than looking at how effective they are with their individual qualities. Do we dismiss Haaland because he can't play football like Benzema/Rooney?

Souness has a point IMO but the way he's put it bluntly i.e. 'lack of football' comes across as blunt and misguided. I think Declan Rice is overrated in terms of pure in possession traits. That third in front of the CBs, he is painfully average in terms of acting as a conduit from defence into attack and he can't control a game under extreme pressure... hence he is a tier below likes of Rodri etc as a deeper midfielder. As a box to box midfielder, his goal threat is decent as is his creativity but again never blown me away in this respect. Off the ball is where he comes into his own, positional nous as well as ball winning ability, add in the set piece threat for Arsenal and you have a very well-rounded midfielder with a fantastic attitude but for me compared to a Roy Keane in his pomp let alone Souness (greatest British CM of all time arguably outside of Charlton more of a AM)... he falls short. #Arsenal #England #Worldcup

Also "moving, carrying and defending" are traits you want in a fullback.
Intelligence, positional sense, reading the game, elite touch and quick passing are among the traits you want in a midfield.
And Rice has none of them.
Souness was absolutely spot on. Bar his call that Rice is a CB. He's not intelligent enough to be a CB. Has all the traits to be a great rightback though.
If he'd come through at a top club in an era of really strong midfielders, he'd have been a right back. And he'd be really good at it as long as he had a CB to talk him through games.

Souness is good at spotting some individual traits in midfielders but he doesn’t get how it all fits together both on an individual and team basis. Suspect that’s why he flopped as a gaffer. The main point he should’ve made is Rice + Anderson as a combination being sub-optimal instead of criticising Rice who has other world class traits. And a midfielder who has a combination of moving, carrying & defending as well as Rice should never be a CB.

@Slmonlfc Yes it’s actually the reverse case of rice who would be better used in a Double pivot. One of the key utilities of rice is that he’s so good defensively that he allows you to get 4 attacking players on the pitch
