Over the almost 6 years developing the visual style for Marathon I put +100 boards like this together, directed at various areas of the game & tone. In this example: Winter olympics, NeoTokyo (the game), Koji Morimoto, Nike Move to Zero, and a chip design.

Port d'Alger, vue de la ville (Port of Algiers, View of the City). by Léon Cauvy (1874–1933). Medium: Watercolor and gouache on paper. Collection: Private collection. Before moving to North Africa, Cauvy was an award-winning painter and a formally trained decorative artist in Paris. In 1907, he was among the first to win the Villa Abd-el-Tif art prize in Algiers, alongside sculptor and painter Paul Jouve. The prize offered winners a one- or two-year artist residency at this historic villa. Cauvy crossed the Mediterranean expecting only a temporary stay. But the region's intense light and vibrant colors captivated him so much that he didn't return to France. Leaving his former career entirely behind, he settled in Algiers permanently and served as the director of the Algiers School of Fine Arts until his death in 1933.

Ottoman masters didn't randomly choose where to place these *sparrow palaces*on a building. To keep the birds from freezing in the winter, they carefully calculated their locations, looking for sheltered spots that blocked the north wind and got plenty of sun -- usually on south-facing facades. They also made sure to put them high enough so cats and dogs couldn't reach them. This was important work. There were charitable foundations that set aside money for birdseed so the birds wouldn't go hungry. People believed that caring for birds was a good deed and destroying their nests was a sin, and that this kind of charity would keep earning a person spiritual rewards even after death.
