I'm running the Boston Marathon for the 3rd time on Monday! In 2018, I had a terrible experience that has honestly become one of the most epic stories of my life. After trying for YEARS to qualify for the Boston Marathon, I finally succeeded! However, on race day the weather was below freezing, gusts of cold wind near 30 MPH...oh and rain...buckets of rain. I started out just fine and was enjoying the experience, but each mile got colder and colder. By the halfway point, I was shivering and my lips were already starting to turn blue. At mile 21, I misjudged a pothole full of water, tripped, and sprained my ankle. I hit the pavement but got back up and hobbled to a nearby medical tent. I told them to tape me up and let me finish! After taping me up, they could see how cold I was and took my temperature. They told me I had hypothermia and I could not leave until I warmed up or quit the race. The medical staff told me I should probably drop out. My friend who was, fortunately, running alongside me also told me to drop out (I guess I looked pretty bad!). (Over 5,000 people dropped out that day including many professional athletes with hypothermia). I told them NO WAY was I quitting after trying for years to run the Boston Marathon! I spent over an hour under blankets in that medical tent trying to warm up. And finally, my temp got back to 98.6 degrees. I was free to finish! I hobbled on my sprained ankle in the freezing rain and wind the final 5 miles or so. I completed the SLOWEST marathon I had ever run, but I had an epic story of perseverance to tell. Fortunately, when I went back to Boston in 2021, my story was less memorable. I finished the race without incident and had a great time. I'm hoping for another celebration of a run on Monday that proves you can accomplish difficult things, even fail, and get back up and finish. I expect better weather and a faster time. 😅 Wish me luck!
