This isn't about safety. It's behaviour policing — blurring the line between people minding their own business and people genuinely putting others at risk. Police should focus on dangerous driving, not people looking at cars. (5/6)

Under these orders, the following can now get you fined: 🔇 Playing music on your car radio 📸 Taking photos of a car gathering 👀 Looking at cars 🍔 Selling food at a car meet 💬 Using "sexual language" (yes, really — 4 councils banned this) (3/6)

These bans were sold as cracking down on dangerous car cruising — such as racing and stunts. But researchers analysed 69 active Public Spaces Protection Orders and found they go much further than that. (2/6)

We all know what misery anti-social behaviour can cause in communities. These use a lower civil standard of proof, but punish with criminal sanctions. Oh and there's NO appeal, and they can be indefinite. The minister's only response was that it's 'in our manifesto'...

Political parties campaigning is part of democracy - it's not 'asb'. Leicester has vibrant culture of political and religious activism: the council shouldn't be crushing it.

@FreeRangeKids @Fox_Claire @manifestoclub All fines not produced by conviction in a court of law are a breach of the Bill of Rights articles 2 & 11. As such not only are they void and unlawful but every attempt to enforce them is a serious crime.

Cutting jury trials will undermine free speech. The Deputy Prime Minister’s plans are the biggest assault on our liberties in 800 years. Research by the Free Speech Union shows that defendants who justify their actions on free-speech grounds are almost twice as likely to be found not guilty in a crown court than in magistrates’ courts. General Secretary of @SpeechUnion, Lord Young stated: “Trial by jury is a bulwark of British liberty and if people charged with speech offences are denied that right, they’re more likely to be convicted.” The Free Speech Union will be campaigning against Lammy’s plans.
