NNsight and NDIF Democratizing Access to Foundation Model Internals The enormous scale of state-of-the-art foundation models has limited their accessibility to scientists, because customized experiments at large model sizes require costly hardware and complex engineering

The best collaboration established at @ICSEconf 2024 is with @_jon_bell_ 🥂 Here's the moment when Student Mentoring Workshop (SMeW) Steering Committee was born! 💫🌱💕 Our main job is to make sure SMeW becomes a traditional ICSE track and happens every year! It's official now!🥳

Currently chairing #icse2024 session on testing. Second most popular area, second smallest room. Hooray for our area - barely room to sit on the floor!

@Alexandra__To Last semester I got a complaint: I shouldn't post all of the lecture material on the website, because some students are then no longer motivated to come to class + engage in discussion because there is no strong requirement to do so to get a grade 🤷‍♂️

@Alexandra__To Congrats on making it through a 100+ student course! Engaging students across all levels of backgrounds is the hardest part. Hopefully the students who just put a few hours of effort into their projects won't come back for a reference letter ;)

@dbp__ @mhyee "...programming had become an equally gigantic problem." Fun to think about how much more gigantic the machines have gotten, and the extent to which the "software crisis" keeps pace as we keep pushing the hardware + software to do more.

@dbp__ @mhyee Other fun reading: Dijkstra's Turing Lecture: cs.utexas.edu/~EWD/transcrip…... "To put it quite bluntly: as long as there were no machines, programming was no problem at all; when we had a few weak computers, programming became a mild problem, and now we have gigantic computers..."

The NSF has invited us to propose an $18m (RI-1) project for infrastructure to help **you** (academic researchers) to study large language models. What should we build to help your LLM research? Respond with your thoughts. (Or answer 3Q's on a form forms.gle/s7EDW4V12mR7U3…) 🧵

@moarbugs Some papers we've had great discussions on in similar classes: GLFuzz (OOPSLA 17), "Simple Testing Can Prevent Most Critical Failures" (OSDI 14), "JEST: N+1-version Differential Testing" (ICSE 19), "Deep Differential Testing of JVM Implementations" (ICSE 19)

I'm teaching a new grad-level course this semester called "Fantastic Bugs and How to Find Them"! We're surveying domain-specific techniques to find special classes of software bugs automatically. Suggestions for case studies and papers welcome! Website: cmu-fantastic-bugs.github.io
