Federal Liberals have agreed to ban social media accounts for Canadians under 16 The non-binding resolution reads: “Set a minimum age of sixteen for creating social media accounts, placing an obligation on Platforms to prevent under-age users from holding accounts“ Liberal Party grassroots passed a non-binding resolution supporting the restriction and placing the responsibility for enforcement on social media companies. Any policies approved at the convention are non-binding, meaning the federal cabinet is not required to turn them into law. However, a January Globe and Mail report, citing confidential sources, suggested the government has been quietly developing a similar policy targeting children under 14.
