This death represents the crucifixion of the identity which we believed was all that we were because in order to return to spiritual consciousness we must come to realize that we are more than the limited physical personality which we identity with everyday. Only then can we actually rise and return back to the source whence we came which would be possible if we keep on identifying with a limited self. It is stated that as long as you still believe you are just a body, you will never awaken because the Egoic Self and the Spiritual Self are at odds. The desires of the ego go against those of your divine self so in order to awaken your divine spark, you must first crucify the ego so that you can be born again. On the Kabbalistic tree of Life, Tifereth is the cross and center of the tree. When spirit descends from Kether, it dies at Tifereth and acquires an ego at Yesod which is manifest in Malkuth. When Spirit wants to realize itself, the ego acquired at Yesod made up of Hod and Netzach must be crucified at Tifereth so that the Spirit can be born.
