One thing is true for sure, the media-political-industrial-complex that is SO powerful in this country has failed and failed and is, right now, failing again… a self-fulfilling prophecy… we seem unable to escape this toxic cycle…

THREAD: Gonna say it again: what a lot of us do in higher education, at least in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, should be very cheap. Yes, we have professional salaries, like teachers and nurses, but beyond that the things I normally actually need are very simple:...

This morning @bbclaurak show had Paul Ovenden as a guest He LIED by saying that Starmer took over a Labour Party "infected with antisemitism". This was not true. It WAS true that many Labour members were expelled for speaking up for Palestinian rights, including many Jewish members Kuenssberg did not make any objection to Ovenden's lies Ovenden had to resign in 2025 for vile, racist text messages about Diane Abbott Unsurprisingly this was not mentioned

@Dabs06721990971 @AlexTaylorNews I disagree on that - but it's late - but the trend on a pattern of more regular extreme weather is undeniable. We have our heads in the sand / up our arses* about the impact of this and our response to it. Watch this space on changes to the AMOC (Gulf Stream..) * take your pick

@Dabs06721990971 @AlexTaylorNews The cold snaps are just that - limited periods with which Western Europe can broadly cope. We don't have an infrastructure to cope with the - undeniable - longer term trend of more frequent extremes in heat, so they get highlighted more. Man made or natural - the trend is there.

We can’t really repeat enough that “publish or perish” has entirely reshaped what academic and intellectual work look like. Obviously nothing like Capital or Phenomenology of Spirit or the Critiques would count as viable academic work today. Impossible to overestimate the cost.
pete wolfendale@deontologistics

This would be far more comforting if it was still possible to find the financial security in academia required to do this sort of systematic work without having to compete with people optimised for churning out papers on piecemeal topics almost no one will ever read.

On June 5th Israel attacked the home of world famous Lebanese sea turtle conservationist Mona Khalil. Mona was hospitalized with burns and injuries to over 70% of her body. Yesterday, June 19th, Mona died from her injuries. This wasn’t an accident. They didn’t make a mistake. Mona’s home was also where she ran her sea turtle conservatory- which she aptly named the Orange House Project- because, after all, her house was painted top to bottom in a deep, bright orange, the color of a late summer sunset. The Orange House Project has been in operation for almost 30 years. You can find it on Facebook and Google Maps, along with dozens of reviews from visitors over the years. So no, it wasn’t an accident or a mistake. Israel knew exactly what it was doing when it bombed the Orange House Project on June 5th. It’s exactly what they’ve been doing since the war with Iran started: ethnically cleansing all of Southern Lebanon so they can steal the land and occupy it for themselves.

This ⬇️ The only thing the 'report' illuminates is a lack of basic research integrity (and the usual companion to that - shameless opportunism).
NewsCord@newscord_org

It is shameful that we even have to do this. That a report this shallow, this lazy, this nakedly bigoted can land and be swallowed whole, while the journalists whose job is to take it apart simply look away. So we will do their work for them. Lowe's "Rape Gang Inquiry" takes a real and painful truth and bends it into something else. The abuse in towns like Rotherham and Rochdale happened. Children were failed for years by police and councils too frightened to act, and in some of those places men of Pakistani heritage were genuinely over-represented. Baroness Casey's official audit said so plainly. We will not insult the survivors by pretending any of that away. But that truth is exactly what is being hijacked. Here is the sleight of hand. Every serious source- Casey, the Home Office, the Jay Inquiry- treats this as a Pakistani-heritage problem rooted in clan, kinship and cover-up. Lowe quietly swaps the word "Pakistani" for "Muslim" and then puts Islam itself in the dock. That one switch is the whole trick, and nothing in his 219 pages earns it. Pull on his evidence, and it comes apart in your hands. The headline "87% had Muslim names" is not a government figure. It is a list one anti-Islam author drew up himself, guessing men's religion from their names and counting only those convicted, in a category he had already decided was Asian. The "250,000 victims" was never a count. It started as a throwaway line from a former UKIP peer who multiplied Rotherham's numbers across the entire country. He then drapes these numbers in phrases like "forced Islamic conversion" so the whole thing reads as a holy war. He even blames immigration for rising rape by pointing at Poland, ignoring that crime figures between countries measure how willing victims are to come forward, not how much actually happens. And here is what they never tell you. The overwhelming majority of child sexual abuse in this country is committed by white men, inside families and online, and most of it never surfaces at all. The government's own 2020 research found group offenders are most commonly white. By aiming his torch at one narrow corner and leaving the rest in darkness, Lowe makes a sliver of cases look like the face of the whole crime, and makes child abuse look like something foreigners carried in. The religious claim is almost too crude to dignify. Islam forbids fornication, rape, alcohol, harming children and forcing anyone into faith. A man who spits "kuffar" while doing what his religion condemns is no more acting on Islam than the countless abusers exposed inside the Church were acting on Christianity. Nobody put Christianity on trial for them. That double standard is the entire game. Read to the last page and the real purpose is impossible to miss. A report about protecting children does not end in deporting millions, stripping citizenship and reviving the death penalty. Lowe says migrants have "colonised" Britain and that he will "remove millions," and his followers cheered it as proof of a "great replacement." This was never a safeguarding document. It is an anti-immigration manifesto wearing the suffering of abused girls as a costume. And it does not stay on the page. This is the rhetoric that thickens the air before the violence comes. Anti-Muslim hate is already at record levels, with more than 6,300 cases logged in 2024, up 165 per cent in two years. We watched where it leads after Southport, when a single lie about the killer sent mobs to set mosques alight. Days after Lowe's report, five men were attacked across Edinburgh, and a man was arrested as counter-terror officers moved in. The Prime Minister himself said the suspect appeared driven by anti-Muslim hatred. The Muslim Council of Britain called it the direct consequence of rhetoric that demonises whole communities. No, you cannot pin one attacker on one report, and we will not pretend to. But you do not get to pour petrol across a country for years and then act shocked at the fire. That is why we have no choice but to answer this. Not because it has earned a response, but because too many people with far louder platforms refuse to give one.

These errors aren't simple mistakes or embarrassing examples of innumeracy. The misrepresentations are so obvious and extreme they can only be understood as parts of a coordinated propaganda campaign designed to demonise Muslims in the UK. Shame on everyone who has gone along with it.
Aaron Dymarskiy@aarondymarskiy

A lot of people have been reposting the claim from this report that 250,000 girls have been raped by grooming gangs in England. In a new article, I show that this number is baseless, and its inclusion in the report is embarrassing.

@BenGrahamUK There is no constitutional (in the Bagehot sense...) requirement for this. I'm sure your own political interest in an General Election here has not swayed you 😉 - but Mike Tapp, as a Labour Party member needs to consider the bigger picture. Worringly, maybe he has...

This is a great point by Mike Tapp. If Andy Burnham becomes Labour leader and then Prime Minister without a general election, millions of British voters won't have voted for him, or even know who he is. That's not how democracy should work. A change of Prime Minister through an internal party coup should automatically trigger a General Election.

Is it time to legislate; if a change of leader is forced by its own Party then a General Election must be called. That would stop the constant churn and focus all politicians on delivery, instead of work place politics. These endless ‘house of cards’ games would end and the country would benefit. Let’s legislate to focus minds.

@spectreon2nd @SussexBoil @zarahsultana @Keir_Starmer Bottom line: we just don't know, so *this level of* speculation is sheer political opportunism. Has it been an issue? Sure, in some localities (see the Jay report for detail). But the number is just about rabble rousing - which is happening. It's baseless and irresponsible.

@MikeTappTweets No. Because it's not a presidential system. Labour voters voted for the Party to be in government: doubtless a good few with reservations about Starmer. If you want to legislate for something, start with our wholly outdated electoral system.
