Saranac Lake officer fatally shoot man who lunged at female partner with knife
On June 29, 2022, outside a Stewart’s Shops in Saranac Lake, New York, 33-year-old Joshua De’Miguel Kavota was fatally shot by police.
Two Saranac Lake officers responded to a stabbing report and confronted Kavota, who was armed with a knife.
Bodycam footage hows Kavota refusing repeated commands to hand over the weapon before lunging at Officer Gabrielle Beebe and knocking her to the ground.
Officer Aaron Sharlow fired two shots, fatally striking Kavota in the chest.
In September 2023, the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation ruled the shooting justified, determining Officer Sharlow had a reasonable belief that Kavota posed an imminent threat to his partner’s life.
To this day the family of Joshua De'Miguel Kavota has repeatedly called for full accountability.
