Nigeria Is Facing An Information War In Its Own Language So this article by @Humangle explores how northern Nigeria has become a major target in a sophisticated information war conducted through Hausa-language media and social platforms. It argues that foreign-aligned influence campaigns especially those connected to Niger’s military junta and Russian-backed networks in the Sahel are exploiting public frustration, insecurity, and distrust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The investigation begins with the experience of Bashir Muhammad, a Nigerian journalist invited to a “pan-African summit” for Hausa-speaking journalists in Niamey, Niger. The event was presented as a media collaboration initiative but allegedly functioned as a political recruitment platform promoting anti-ECOWAS and pro-junta narratives. Organised by Mariam Laouali, also known as Sarkin Abzin, the summit gathered journalists and political figures who criticised Western influence and accused Nigeria of serving foreign interests. Several attendees later realised the event was less about journalism and more about spreading political propaganda. The article explains that language is central to the campaign’s effectiveness. Niger’s military ruler, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, repeatedly delivered speeches in Hausa to directly influence audiences in northern Nigeria. In these speeches, he accused Nigeria, France, and the United States of supporting terrorism to destabilise Niger and other Sahel states. Though independent evidence for these claims was lacking, the messages resonated because they aligned with existing suspicions and frustrations among some Nigerians. HumAngle’s survey in Kano found that half of respondents believed Tchiani’s allegations, while only a minority rejected them outright. The report also links the campaign to broader Russian influence operations across the Sahel. Following coups in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, Russian-backed networks reportedly expanded online propaganda efforts using TikTok, regional broadcasters, and local influencers. The article notes that organisations connected to Russia’s “Africa Initiative” and successor structures to the Wagner Group have developed media strategies designed to legitimise military regimes and weaken confidence in democratic governments. Ultimately, the article warns that the conflict is no longer only military or political but informational. Control over language, narrative, and public trust has become a powerful weapon. By targeting Hausa-speaking audiences with emotionally resonant messages, influence networks are shaping perceptions of Nigeria’s government and redefining who citizens see as allies or enemies. humanglemedia.com/nigeria-is-fac…

Did you hear that Fulani boy say bandits are disturbing them in the bush? He was telling the truth. 💯 As a survivor of kidnapping and banditry, I can never forget the third guy(Awal) we escaped with. He was a young Fulani boy kidnapped while grazing his oga’s cows. His oga paid ₦5 million ransom, yet they still refused to release him. They kept demanding more money. For 35 days, that boy suffered in captivity with us. No proper food, no peace, only fear, hunger, torture, and uncertainty. By God’s miracle, we escaped alive together. Bandits do not care about tribe, religion, or background. They kidnap Christians, Muslims, Hausa, Yoruba, Fulani, Igbo anybody they can get. Pain has no tribe. Fear has no religion. The sad truth is that Nigerians are all in deep trouble if this insecurity continues like this. 🥹💔

ISWAP Confirms Death of Abu-Bilal al-Mainuki After U.S -Nigeria Special Forces Raid Near Lake Chad The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has confirmed the death of one of its senior figures, Abu-Bilal al-Mainuki, following a recent operation by United States Special Forces targeting the group’s enclave near the Lake Chad region in North-East Nigeria. The confirmation was contained in a lengthy statement released through the extremist group’s media channels, in which the terrorists described members of their media unit killed during the raid as “martyrs.” The development comes about two weeks after a coordinated U.S. special operations mission reportedly targeted an ISWAP media and command facility located deep within the Lake Chad basin forests. Security sources had earlier disclosed that the operation involved a precision airborne assault supported by surveillance drones, intelligence assets and attack aircraft targeting high-value Islamic State-linked operatives. According to the sources, at least three foreign ISIS elements were killed during the strike alongside several women believed to be attached to the insurgent camp. In the statement, the group appeared to acknowledge the elimination of Abu-Bilal al-Mainuki while attempting to glorify the operation’s casualties. “And ponder, O servants of Allah, what prompted crusader America to cross all these distances all the way to these forests,” the statement read. The group claimed that U.S. forces spent six months tracking Abu-Bilal al-Mainuki using “all types of drones” before launching what it described as a “massive multi-point airborne landing” involving “large forces and heavy gunfire.” The terrorists further stated that American forces attempted “to capture a single Muslim man in the jungles of Africa.” In another section of the statement, the group acknowledged that its media headquarters was directly targeted during the operation. “And what drives America to land its planes and the elite of its forces… to attack a newly established media headquarters in the middle of the forests,” the statement added. The terrorists claimed that members of the media unit fought until they were killed, stating that they “did not surrender to their enemy and did not compromise their religion.” The statement also praised the slain operatives as “memorizers of the Book of Allah” and described them as a “unique media elite.” Although the exact number of militants killed was not officially disclosed by ISWAP, intelligence sources indicated that 175 fighters met their waterloo in the operation which significantly disrupted ISWAP’s media infrastructure and command activities within the Lake Chad axis. The operation is also seen as part of broader counterterrorism efforts aimed at preventing extremist groups from rebuilding transnational operational and propaganda networks in West Africa.
