1/9 My chapter in this book ed by @aljhlester looks at a monument, which in plain sight in London captures a moment of British violence in China: a Royal Marine bayonetting a Chinese soldier.

My latest Archive pick for @chinabksreview is Peking Picnic, a 1930s novel of manners featuring evocative descriptions of Old Beijing and timeless observations about what it means to be an expat in China. Also smoking. Lots and lots of smoking.

February is a short month and there are lots of fascinating maritime themed photos in our collection. I've selected two running up photos to conclude this month 😁 FH01-176: Sampans in a typhoon shelter, Hong Kong JC01-48: A picturesque view of a junk with a setting sun, HK

F. Hagger was an Electrical Artificer in the (British) Royal Navy in the 1930s, serving on H.M.S. Medway on the China Station. The well captioned photographs document the ship's trip out east and stopovers in Weihai, Hong Kong, Yantai and Shanghai ⛵ see hpcbristol.net/collections/ha…

Steel was the ultimate prestige product for socialist states. For the transnational story of steel in Maoist China, check out this new multilingual study by @hirako13, now available on Cambridge Core. And it has footnotes rather than endnotes!! (big plus) cambridge.org/core/books/mak…

@philip_thai @JosephASeeley Yep! Still so much that can be done with these records. Even though 60k files in Nanjing remain (re)closed, more and more personal and station records held elsewhere have come into the open.

@JosephASeeley We should do a panel or workshop someday on the Chinese Maritime Customs Service archives. It is sadly underutilized but incredibly useful to all kinds of scholars. Copying @bickers in case he is ever interested in the future.

Thank you @JosephASeeley for your new book! A fantastic history of environment, smugglers, and guerrillas along a contested borderland. Looking forward to reading it and hosting your upcoming visit to Northeastern.

A very enjoyable History Salon in the stylish building of Royal Photographic Society@Paintworks last Saturday. Billys inspiring talk on his AI-assisted articulation of the images of Tiger Balm Mansion, followed by Kelvin’s contextualisation of Aw Boom Haw’s business empire.
