Nel Suo discorso, il Papa ha richiamato il peso della storia algerina come fonte di uno sguardo critico sugli equilibri del mondo contemporaneo, rivolgendo un appello alla comunità internazionale perché si costruisca un nuovo corso della storia, fondato sul rispetto della dignità di ogni popolo: «Non moltiplicando incomprensioni e conflitti, ma rispettando la dignità di ognuno e lasciandovi toccare dal dolore altrui, potrete diventare protagonisti di un nuovo corso della storia, oggi più urgente che mai, a fronte di continue violazioni del diritto internazionale e di tentazioni neocoloniali».

"God desires peace for every nation: a peace that is not merely an absence of conflict, but one that is an expression of justice and dignity." Pope Leo stressed this at the Martyrs’ Monument in Algiers, Algeria on the first day of his Apostolic Journey to the African continent.

Pope Leo XIV will travel to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea (April 13–23). Just before the prayer vigil for peace and the recitation of the Holy Rosary began in St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV made a surprise appearance in St. Peter’s Square to greet and bless the faithful who were unable to enter the Basilica. He thanked them for their presence, called on everyone to become “bearers of peace,” and said that, in the light of the Risen Christ, a new peace is possible — one that unites all peoples as brothers and sisters. Entrusting the crowd and their loved ones to God’s care, he concluded by invoking Mary, Queen of Peace.

On Monday, Pope Leo will begin an 11-day apostolic trip to Africa, where roughly 20% of the world’s Catholics live. The visit will include 11 cities, eight public addresses, and eight Masses.

This morning, Pope Leo celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter in St. Peter's Square with tens of thousands of pilgrims before extending his Urbi et Orbi Blessing.

Pope Leo's Easter message: "Let those who have weapons lay them down! Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace! Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue! Not with the desire to dominate others, but to encounter them!"

Pope Leo released his prayer intention for the month of April, inviting Catholics to pray for priests who are facing a personal crisis in their vocation.
