American population density is just so much lower, even in big cities, that you can live your entire life without coming into contact with other people. You don't run into them on public transport, you don't share social spaces. A friend visited Albuquerque last year, and said it seemed almost completely non-Hispanic white - in reality it's less than 40%. Segregation, alive and well.
