Posting a “greatest hit” again as a reminder of the genetic diversity and variability of color often observed on cool season turfgrasses in the spring. A nice article from the USGA Green Section on this phenomenon - usga.org/content/usga/h…

Hate this time of year...hearing of great people and highly qualified supers losing their jobs around the country. To club board members and leadership teams, your super spends countless hours on the course, sacrifices time with family, and spends sleepless nights thinking about the property. Nobody cares more about the course than they do. Have a conversation. Learn why things are the way they are. Realize that not all properties are the same. Environments and resources make a difference. A course that does 35,000 rounds with heavy cart traffic isn't going to be the same as the one your buddy is a member at that plays 15,000 rounds with caddies. Supers...control the narrative. Communicate with your members. Stand on the tee or spend time in the grill room answering questions. They may be difficult conversations during the challenging times, but facing problems head on, discussing the issues and laying out the path forward goes a long way. Getting the facts from you is better than the hearsay and rumors that will circulate around the bar.

A lot of GC Supers have lost their jobs this year that didn’t deserve to. Brutal winter, weird spring and summer. You can be good at growing grass and have years you struggle due to weather. If you have a Super who has done well for 3 years, he doesn’t become bad overnight.

Before the sun rises, they’re already hard at work. Every detail matters. Every blade of grass counts. Golf thrives because of superintendents. Happy #ThankASuper Day!

@chaddwill Toughest year for grass growers in a long time. All examples spot on. Even the best, with all of the tools available, have scars. Now magnify that to the small operations with minimal inputs. They are struggling even worse. Owners, members, homeowners, all need to understand.

For me, 2025 will go down as the toughest year to grow grass in the last 20. Winter brought ice & cold temps for winter-kill. Then rain ALOT this spring. Then straight to hot. Back to rain. Back to hot. I feel for all turf managers. You’ve earned your pay and it’s not over yet!

A superintendent should never have to apologize for dialing back green speeds during wicked weather stretches. Protecting the long-term health of playing surfaces should be priorities A, B, C, D and E.
