CHBA is deeply concerned by the lack of measures to support the homeownership aspirations of Canadians in #Budget2025. Beyond reiterating the federal pledge to remove the GST on new homes for first-time buyers – which has still not made its way through the parliamentary process and requires an expansion to all buyers to meaningfully address affordability challenges – #Budget2025 places heavy focus on Build Canada Homes (BCH), which is squarely focused on homelessness and increasing Canada’s social housing stock. While measures to support government-subsidized housing are needed, that won’t support market-rate housing, where 95% of Canadians live. The number of units that get built under BCH will only represent less than 1% of the total housing starts required to reach the federal government’s goal of 500,000 units per year. There are many more policy measures, far beyond BCH, that need to be enacted to address the #housingaffordability and supply crisis.
