@AcademicAgent_X Although Israel did get some arms from America through smuggling with help from organised crime in the USA

@AcademicAgent_X Not read that book but in 1948 the chief arms supplier to Israel was Czechoslovakia. As the latter was a Soviet client state by then it's implausible they did this without Moscow's approval. US and GB had arms embargo against all the belligerents in that war.

In case anyone is interested, I suspect the book by Glubb mentioned here is this one. As I recall, there's a lot more Russian involvement in his analysis than I expected.

@AcademicAgent_X Reading Glubb at the moment - he's quite even handed in his apportioning of blame. Suspect this will be a biased hatchet job

@AcademicAgent_X Populism just seems to give us a choice between Reform's embarrassing boomer Butlins entertainer charlatanism and the Green's embarrassing millennial gay AIDS shit.

I'm disappointed by this performance. Hannah Spencer couldn't think of anything better than "Oggy, oggy, oggy! Oi, oi, oi!"? Obscure reference but I am reminded of Run DMC at Wrestlemania V who just came out and said "WRESTLEMANIA" over and over again.

@trussliz You have a knack for adopting causes when they've lost any vitality or relevance. From what I've seen the most recent CPAC event was a huge flop. The Greenland and now Iran larks has made American conservatism toxic abroad. British right needs own path separate from America.

Whether you follow me from the right or the left, I'd just like to remind you that I disavow and discourage all placard activism as the least effective form of political action: 1. you must ask government permission ("please may we protest you"), 2. easy to infiltrate, 3. gives enemy control.

@BIDecomo @AcademicAgent_X Yes was aware our gvt handled the 30s better than USA at least in terms of the economy , still somewhat astonishing how well they did given the circumstances

@collapsingnew @AcademicAgent_X The national government's response to the great depression was by international standards highly successful (much more than FDRs in terms of figures). Economic historians are quite aware of this. Good currency police using the the sterling area.

@0donsbastard @AcademicAgent_X Low productivity growth + mass immigration + inability due to banking crash to keep increasing personal debt like they did in Blair years to paper over the cracks

@AcademicAgent_X x.com/i/status/19806… more nails in he coffin of the idea mass immigration was essential for the 'economy'. As for the peak in 2000s I wonder how much of that was due to personal debt peaking in those late Blair/Brown years just before the banking crisis
MrZippy@collapsingnew

@AcademicAgent_X Credit card economy: Personal debt boomed, productivity stagnant, trade balance worsened, manufacturing continued to decline

@mehblehdontcare @AcademicAgent_X When I first saw all the older Bond films when I was 12/13 details like that usually went over my head. Revisiting them when older it's fascinating recognising these little things

@collapsingnew @AcademicAgent_X And Blofeld and SPECTRE were kind of de facto Nazis minus the racial angle. Brutal "fascistic" extorters. Maybe the 'ghost' or uh...'spectre' of Nazi Germany, in a way.
