Source reveals Bonelela "Buzza James" Mgudlwa is related to Dr Nandipha Magudumane
A series of reported family connections, court matters, and Covid-era corruption allegations has emerged, placing lawyer Bonelela “Buzza James” Mgudlwa at the centre of several public controversies.
According to a source, Mgudlwa, who is also the husband of media personality Anele Mdoda is allegedly related as a cousin to Dr Nandipha Magudumana, a figure widely known for her involvement in the escape saga of convicted murderer Thabo Bester. Dr Magudumana, who became a national focal point following the dramatic prison escape and recapture scandal, remains one of the most closely scrutinised figures in recent South African criminal history.
Her alleged cousin Mgudlwa is said to have also been drawn into legal battles connected to the case’s broader media fallout. Mgudlwa, an attorney was part of a legal effort linked to attempts to challenge or block the release of the Netflix documentary Beauty and the Bester, which examined the controversial saga involving Magudumana and Bester. According to the allegations, legal pressure was mounted in an attempt to compel the streaming platform Netflix to remove or restrict the production- moves that ultimately did not succeed.
"Buzza James is Dr Nandipha' cousin," the source said.
However, the developments centre around a separate and unrelated scandal involving Covid-19 procurement contracts.
A controversial PPE deal, allegedly struck while Katleho Mokonyane and Bonelela Mgudlwa were in a romantic relationship and shared a child, has now resulted in a staggering repayment order of more than R14 million.
The Special Tribunal is said to have ruled that their company unlawfully benefited from Covid-19 personal protective equipment contracts awarded during the height of the pandemic.
Katleho Mokonyane is described in these reports as the daughter of senior ANC figure Nomvula Mokonyane, adding a politically charged dimension to the already explosive allegations.
According to investigators referenced in this fictional account, the contracts were awarded by the Mpumalanga Department of Health in 2020 for the supply of surgical masks and medical jumpsuits at a time when urgent procurement processes were in place due to the national health crisis.
However, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) reportedly found serious irregularities in the awarding of the tender. These included claims that only one company linked to Mokonyane and Mgudlwa was invited to submit pricing, with standard competitive bidding processes allegedly bypassed.
Even more damning, the tribunal reportedly heard that mandatory procurement structures such as bid committees were not properly convened, while questions were raised about whether the company had the required licensing to supply medical-grade equipment.
In a scathing finding quoted in the report, the court is said to have ruled the contracts “invalid and void,” concluding that the parties involved acted “fraudulently, dishonestly and/or improperly.”
The repayment order reportedly covers more than R13 million for medical jumpsuits and over R1 million for surgical masks, funds drawn from public coffers during one of the most vulnerable periods in the country’s recent history.
Despite the ruling, the pair are said to be contesting the decision, arguing that the goods were delivered and used, and therefore the state should not reclaim funds after benefiting from the supplies.
A separate source insisted, “People are however mixing personal history with legal outcomes. These are complex situations, and not everything being circulated reflects the full picture.”
Meanwhile, Mgudlwa’s alleged marriage to Anele Mdoda has further intensified public interest, although insiders quoted in this narrative stress that she is “far removed from the legal and political disputes” at the centre of the allegations.
