As a historical note, the first and only woman to serve as mayor was Mrs Ena Moses Heart (1989–1996). The first mayor to be elected through popular vote was Mr George Howard (1997–2000).

Eighty-six years ago today, Corn Island became a municipality of Nicaragua, gaining the autonomy to administer local affairs under local leadership. The first appointed mayor was Mr Isahia Harold Lampson, designated by Presidential Decree No. 312.

Happy 86th anniversary, Corn Islands! Today, we celebrate another anniversary of the elevation of our islands to the status of a municipality, and the multicultural and multiethnic community that makes up this land we call home.
