You all made fun of me when I tweeted this last year. The people still on the MAGA train need to get off.

When a man cannot bear to will anything great, he is tempted to console himself by declaring that greatness itself is over. This is the blackpill: the will turned inward, gnawing on itself, finding a perverse comfort in saying, “no one can win now, therefore I am wise for not trying.” Our whole civilization is tempted by that move. The West made a Faustian bargain centuries ago: we sought near infinite expansion outward, infinite mastery of our world, building towers of glass and circuits reaching for the stars... all of this was achieved on the condition that It (the west) would eventually forget why it wanted any of it. Now, in the tired dusk of that project, you hear the bargain echoing in Christian language: “the days of converting the nations are over.” Note this is not “we have failed,” but rather “history itself is now uniquely closed to greatness,” almost as if the Devil’s signature at the bottom of our Faustian contract is now a law of nature. The abyss loves this because it needs no armies, only men who decide that decline is inevitable and therefore morally superior to resist. It whispers to us, who are always in danger of becoming the last men: “You are late, the cycle is finished, the world‑spirit has moved on, your task is to be mere middle managers of the ruins, not to storm anything yourself.” So Christians therefore begin to speak like curators instead of conquerors, as impotent guardians of a relic faith, carefully explaining why still holding the hope of a triumphant Christendom is childish. But if the West really did cash in its Faustian soul with this boundless striving, then the only honorable counter‑bargain is to strive harder, unceasingly- to drive that misdirected urge for infinity back into sanctity, children, nations. For a Christian the alternative to this managerial spirit is obedience to the commands of Christ to discipline the nations. The line from the Charge of the Light Brigade still stands as a rebuke to the blackpill: “Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die.” The valley of death does not suddenly become less lethal when we stay on our safe ridge and write clever epitaphs lamenting the former crusades. It just becomes empty of any riders, and denies us (and Christ through us) the glory of a Martyrs death. Better, then, for us, the Last Men to ride, and if this truly is the twilight of the West, let it be said that there were at least a few who treated the Via Dolorosa as a cavalry charge and not a guided tour of decline.

Sources are reporting that in Monaco today Pope Leo declared himself to be an integralist and say he supports confessional states. We can finally toss out Dignitatis Humanae, at last! . . (Note to my more earnest readers: that last bit was sarcasm.)

This Holy Week, in an interview with Ben Shapiro, Bishop Robert Barron told Shapiro that Pope Leo XIV's anti-war comments do not refer to the Iran War. Ben Shapiro: "How should people interpret the Pope’s recent comments on the evil of War?" Bp. Barron: "I furthermore agree with you that Pope Leo is not referring specifically to the Iran War." I suspect Bp. Barron will be receiving a phone call from the Vatican after Easter....
