We got to ask @aoifeodwyer a few questions about her work in web3 — as you collect, here's a little bit more about the artist! 👇 Tell us more about the piece you created to be featured in Floor — what should the collectors know about it? I wanted to bridge worlds with this piece. I recently created my ‘Haelocean Interface’ collection where I’m exploring how the technology and the nature in my imagined worlds might look as a virtual/real 3D avatar driven world. It’s an imagined metaverse where the biological and bionic can connect. A human to avatar junction. This piece is me trying to imagine how the character from my first ICONS drop would plug into this new world. How would this portal transform and evolve her? Would any of her critter pals try to hitch a ride? Is Steve with her? Oyne is Enyo in reverse. Turned upside down and inside out and re-imagined. My two creative worlds colliding and colluding to find connection, commonality and distinction. Created by using AI tools to blend my 2D hand drawn illustration of Enyo with the new 3D style AI generated outputs of my ‘Haelocean Interface’ work. Bridging where I was when I first drew Enyo for ICONS series 1 and where I am creatively today. Tell us more about the new AI pieces you’ve been creating. What made you excited about incorporating AI into your work? How do you see AI influencing your art moving forward? I find it so exciting and inspiring to have the ability to filter and merge and evolve my creative voice and vision and perspective through all the human visual outputs AI tools can reference. I want to collaborate with the digital collective consciousness of all humanity. I want to mindfully contribute to what I see as the ultimate repository for all that humanity has been and can be. Some of my favourite results so far have been from merging my 2D hand-drawn digital illustrations with AI generated outputs in styles that are otherwise inaccessible to me – like photography and 3D models. I’ve been able to crack open the realms of possibility when it comes to my love of world building and these tools have given me the creative freedom to express my ideas in new ways. My concepts brought to life in alternate dimensions but all still tied back to me. A quantum entanglement of creative thought. These experiments spawned a new creative concept for me where I started to imagine my own onchain mycelium network ‘Hyefa’. In my latest ‘Hyphaeon Dreamscapes’ body of work I’m questioning how the hyphae of the mycelium networks of the world might dream about our digital avatars. I’m so intrigued by the concept of the bioelectric and how all technology is powered by the same energy that powers the cells in our bodies and that helps sends signals between trees. The process is very much connected to the concept and to the final output in ways I wouldn’t have anticipated before I started experimenting. I’ll continue to explore AI tools in my workflow as reference material for hand-drawn work which I did with my ‘Mycorrhizal Transfusion’ illustration and also as a way to express ideas in other dimensions as I use it to move through creative portals. Beyond your own work, what aspects of web3 art or the web3 art community do you enjoy the most or find the most inspiring/exciting? I’m continuously impressed by how resilient and adaptable and persistent the folks in this space continue to be. We’ve been riding the waves of a volatile market, changing metas and hype cycles, a brutal bear and the absurdity of being terminally online and onchain in a world that is in perpetual crisis. As one of my favourite memes postures – the horrors persists, but so do we. This year I’ve formed deeper connections within niche (predominately queer and artist driven) communities and have felt more seen, supported and empowered than ever. I’ve met new people via the web3 social ecosystems unfolding and felt as connected as ever to some of the folks I’ve known here since the beginning. I’ve found joy and purpose in supporting others through the new waves of accessible free or fees only open mints and token tipping and seen the imagined promise of new structures built around mutual aid and reciprocal financial and energetic systems in action in small but still deeply meaningful ways. I’m excited to do more of the doing when it comes to what I see as the true potential for web3 and blockchains and NFTs and all the rest of this tech that is advancing all around us and through us and with us. I’m excited about deliberate, considered approaches to what it means to be onchain as an artist, a queer person, a neurodivergent woman and someone who can see a future beyond the things that get attention externally but don’t fully resonate with my curated but still very real and valid experience of the space. What’s next for you — what are you excited about in the next 6-12 months? I’m so excited for what’s next. I’ll get to finish the first generation of the Foofees which is still my main love that I’ve been building since 2021. I’ve got a fun collaborative project in progress with another project I love that’ll be a merging of worlds in a way I really enjoy. I’m excited to grow my onchain mycelium network through ‘Hyefa’ which I launched as an onchain subscription with Hypersub recently. One of the main things I’ll be doing through that is monthly live co-creation drawing sessions which is something I did as part of ICONS series 1 and have wanted to do more regularly. I can’t wait to get to know folks more closely and see what we create together each month and to see how it’ll evolve over time. I’ve come to accept that it’s pretty impossible to predict how things will move in this space over any amount of time but I’m as bullish as ever on my commitment to being present here as an artist, community member and builder, advocate, educator and creator. I’m incredibly grateful to be here.
