Tara Calico was a 19-year-old University of New Mexico student who disappeared in 1988 while riding her bike. Months later, a photo found in a Florida parking lot showed a bound and gagged girl who looked like her, alongside a boy. Tara was never found, and no arrests were ever made.

This is one of America’s most haunting unsolved disappearances. On September 20, 1988, Tara Calico vanished while on her usual 35 mile bike route near Belen, New Mexico, a route her mother had warned her was dangerous due to reckless drivers on Highway 47. Her bicycle and a personal cassette player were never found, and despite witnesses reporting a pickup truck following her that day, no solid leads emerged. Then in June 1989, a Polaroid photo was discovered in a Port St. Joe, Florida parking lot showing a young woman and a teenage boy, both bound and gagged, lying in the back of what appeared to be a van, the woman bore a striking resemblance to Tara, and a partially visible book in the image was identified as one from a series Tara owned. The FBI and Scotland Yard both analyzed the photo but could never definitively confirm the woman was Tara. Over the years, various suspects were investigated, including a local man whose truck matched descriptions, but no arrests were ever made. Tara’s mother, Patty Doel, dedicated the rest of her life to searching for her daughter before passing away in 2006, and the case remains officially open to this day, one of the most chilling cold cases in American history, kept alive largely by that single, disturbing Polaroid.
