NEW: Friday afternoon, WA Governor Bob Ferguson quietly signed into law HB 2266. This controversial homeless housing bill strips away safeguards protecting communities from crime, chaos, and death that always follows "permanent supportive housing" units like the ones run by Plymouth Housing and the Downtown Emergency Service Center(DESC.) The government can now ram through these apartments and shelters for drug addicts and neighbors can't do anything about it. We knew the Democrats would vote for this insane bill. They should have focused on the drug dealers living in these apartments or the fact more people now die of drug overdoses behind closed doors than on the streets. We can’t use budget reconciliation to pass the SAVE America Act because (1) it’s unavoidably non-budgetary, (2) the parliamentarian will deem it as such, and (3) the Senate GOP won’t overrule her. Suggesting otherwise undermines our central message: that when the Senate reconvenes, we *must* keep it on the Senate floor until it passes. Don’t fall for—or feed—the distraction!

The Senate GOP has exactly two options if it wants to avoid drifting into irrelevance and a stunning loss in November: (1) Keep the filibuster and 60-vote cloture rule fully intact, but stand ready to overcome Senate Democrats’ unprecedented pattern of obstruction by aggressively enforcing the “talking filibuster”—a move that would require senators to work longer, harder hours and take fewer recesses, but lead to more thoughtful, careful deliberation in the legislative process, OR (2) Nuke the filibuster. I strongly prefer the first option. But we must choose either one or the other—because the status quo isn’t working and the resulting inertia isn’t just making it impossible to pursue a coherent agenda; it’s hurting the American people.
