Post Office locked in to keeping Horizon system by Fujitsu owning the code. Case study in perils of really dumb IT outsourcing. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The Post Office paid more than £600m to continue using the faulty Horizon IT system despite deciding to ditch it.
Fujitsu collected £2.5bn since 1999 for the flawed system, paid ZERO compensation to innocent postmasters.
No one charged for the scandal.

@Noahpinion Did Thatcher actually reduce public spending, though? I thought that was a myth.

English

@SussexLive This is how West Sussex County Council managed its IT contractor four months before the project was paused and a year or so before DXC left the project. Still, it got £6.6m after signing a £4m deal and worked for effectively half the time.

Today our @AP White House reporter was denied access to the Oval Office because the Associated Press recognizes the international body of water on our southern coastline as the Gulf of Mexico, while acknowledging President Donald Trump's order to rename it the Gulf of America. Why does the UK keep getting beaten up by IT suppliers? theregister.com/2025/01/28/uk_… via @theregister

@ADalrymple There's often blame on both sides: sellers oversell, and buyers underestimate. But given the number of struggling projects, both should proceed with more caution. It can't be good for vendors' reputations, even if they're still picking up the $
English

@datadictum I suspect there is plenty of blame on both sides but at what point do things like this become 'stop hitting yourself'?

The budget for UK council's delayed ERP project went from £2.6 million to around £40 million. How are they paying for it? By selling assets. By me. theregister.com/2025/01/27/wes…

watching @potus more carefully recently has really changed my perspective on him (i wish i had done more of my own thinking and definitely fell in the npc trap).
i'm not going to agree with him on everything, but i think he will be incredible for the country in many ways!
