Context continues to matter when evaluating the Browns' quarterbacks. Dillon Gabriel has been outstanding through the first four days of camp. His footwork, fundamentals and mechanics have all stood out. His feet consistently match his eyes, and he appears to have an excellent grasp of the offense. On Saturday, I had him as my Player of the Day because he earned it. At the same time, context cannot be ignored. Gabriel has taken the majority of his reps against the second-, third- and fourth-team defenses. That doesn't diminish how well he has played, but it is an important part of the evaluation. Who you're facing, the down and distance, the situation, the pass rush, the field position and the level of defensive talent all matter when judging quarterback play. That's why camp evaluations require more than counting completions, interceptions or touchdowns. For me, Gabriel is a perfect example of why context matters. He has been really, really good, and that's exactly how I'll evaluate it. As he earns more opportunities against the first-team defense, we'll gain an even better understanding of where he stands. Until then, the honest evaluation is simple: Dillon Gabriel has played outstanding football, and the context surrounding those reps should be part of the conversation - not ignored. @KenCarman @SportsBoyTony @923TheFan
