The code was really robust. Due to an operator procedure error, the rendezvous radar (intended for docking with the Command Module after liftoff) was left on in AUTO mode. This sent spurious, unnecessary data (high-frequency โ€œcycle stealsโ€ or counter increment signals) to the AGC due to a design/interface issue in the radar coupling units. This extra load (roughly 10-15% more processing demand) pushed the computer near its limits during powered descent, when it was already ~85% loaded with guidance, navigation, and control tasks. Buzz Aldrinโ€™s request for a delta-H (altitude difference) display added a bit more load, triggering executive overflow alarms: 1202 (โ€œExecutive overflow โ€” No VAC Areasโ€) and 1201 (โ€œNo Core Setsโ€). These meant the computer lacked free memory slots (โ€œcore setsโ€ or vector accumulator areas) for new tasks. The alarms occurred multiple times (four 1202s and one 1201), but the computer did not crash or fail. It performed a quick โ€œsoft restart,โ€ flushing lower-priority tasks while preserving essential ones like steering and throttle control. The priority-based executive ensured critical landing functions continued. Not only was the code well written, it had intelligent fall back behavior should the system get overloaded.

MORE: Russiaโ€™s June 1 to 2 strikes are part of a pattern of escalating Russian strikes against Kyiv City intended to take advantage of Patriot interceptor shortages and distract from Russiaโ€™s inability to secure its deep rear from Ukrainian long-range strikes, as well as from its battlefield setbacks. Putin is using massive strike packages against Kyiv in an effort to break Ukraineโ€™s will to fight as well as to disguise his weakness, particularly his inability to secure Russian territory, including Russiaโ€™s capital, from Ukraineโ€™s deep strikes. He is also seeking to recover from the embarrassment of having had to ask Ukraine for permission to hold even a dramatically scaled-down Victory Day parade on May 9.

NEW: Russian forces conducted yet another devastating drone and missile strike series against Ukraine on the night of June 1 to 2, heavily targeting Kyiv City. The Russian strikes killed at least 22 civilians and injured at least 130. Other Key Takeaways: Russiaโ€™s June 1 to 2 strikes are part of a pattern of escalating Russian strikes against Kyiv City intended to take advantage of Patriot interceptor shortages and distract from Russiaโ€™s inability to secure its deep rear from Ukrainian long-range strikes as well as from its battlefield setbacks. Neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces made confirmed advances throughout the theater in the past day.

One of Wall Streetโ€™s most famous short sellers has been found guilty of securities fraud. Prosecutors said Andrew Left used social media posts to move stocks and profit from the swings. The verdict could influence how short selling is viewed and regulated in the US. @Lianting explains: bloom.bg/3PYJ7ZF

I am DEVASTATED. Our beloved, beautiful cat Sunny, after just 2 years of age, passed away today after a thrombotic embolism, or a blood clot. We found him in our backyard, tiny little thing, almost 2 years ago, and he leaves a giant hole in our family. Broken hearted.๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ญ

Big progress vs cancer, folks. The kind of event curves from randomized trials that we've not seen before for a couple of the most deadly cancers. Congrats to the oncology research community for getting these trial done. #ASCO26, @ASCO

After every Russian escalation into a NATO country we hear leaders repeating the mantra "We stand with..." But we could do much more than standing around. For example โ€” we could create a European-Ukrainian defense union. Fund it with confiscated Russian frozen assets. Close the skies in Ukraine, making Ukraine and other frontline states safer. These things are very possible and this work could start today. Instead, I am sadly reminded of how Britain and France โ€œstood withโ€ Poland in 1939 while that country was being dismembered. It was called the Phony War, because mere declarations of โ€œsupportโ€ mean very little on the ground, and do nothing to prevent real war. Actions always speak louder than words, and usually cost much less than inaction.

Two years ago today, social media was flooded with a photograph that touched millions of hearts: a thin young woman with remarkably deep eyes smiling for the first time in a long while, wrapped in a Ukrainian flag. She was Mariana Checheliuk, a 24-year-old police officer from Mariupol. On May 31, 2024, she finally returned home as part of a major prisoner exchange. Her story is one of extraordinary strength and resilience. Here are just a few facts worth remembering: The hell of Azovstal: At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Mariana and her younger sister sheltered from Russian shelling in the basements of the Azovstal plant. Captivity: During the evacuation of civilians through a humanitarian corridor, the sisters were separated. Her younger sister was eventually reunited with their parents, while Mariana was sent to a filtration camp in Bezimenne and later transferred to Olenivka, as well as prisons in Taganrog and Kamyshin. 728 days in captivity: Mariana spent exactly two years imprisoned. Her captors reportedly tried to break her spirit, offering her a different citizenship and threatening her with a lengthy prison sentence. She refused to betray her oath or her country. The cost of freedom: Two years of imprisonment, hunger, and isolation severely damaged her health. She returned home suffering from chronic bronchitis, exhaustion, and serious leg problems. > โ€œI believed I would return home, even though they constantly told us that Ukraine no longer existed,โ€ Mariana later recalled. Today marks two years since her release. Since then, Mariana has undergone a long process of rehabilitation and recovery. This day is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of the terrible price many Ukrainians have paid and of the need to continue fighting for everyone who remains in Russian captivity. We remember. We honor. We wait for them all to come home.
