He left Davis having engineered human ligaments, run western blots, qPCR, and measured collagen synthesis and degradation in completely novel ways.

Despite personal tragedy, in two visits to Davis, he taught himself enough biology to do western blots and became one of less than 100 people in the world to engineer ligaments. A wonderful achievement made possible by the wonderful supportive scientists (Alec and Ann) in my lab

A quick note on the scientist. @dr_sayednabil came to my lab from Egypt without a biology background (he is a sports psychologist working in ACL return to play).

The result could explain why IGF1 has not been effective in accelerating tension/ligament recovery after injury but definitely has a positive effect on growth.

Importantly, he developed a way to measure collagen breakdown in our engineered ligaments and showed that IGF1 decreases degradation in a rapamycin-independent way and this is how the growth factor promotes an increase in collagen and mechanics.
